Post Green Light For Dodge 'Challenger'

Green light for Dodge 'Challenger'

• Muscle car concept gets go-ahead
• Challenger to be based on Chrysler 300C chassis
• Power likely to come from Chrysler Hemi V8

Dodge's Challenger concept car will go into production, says parent company Chrysler, and the car will be on sale in 2008.

The concept was shown at this year's Detroit show to a rapturous reception. The Michigan manufacturer says it has not experienced such a response to a concept since the original Dodge Viper in 1989.

The Challenger's debut will come 39 years after the original Challenger's. It is not the only model from the early 1970s muscle car era to be revived, as Ford's Mustang is selling strongly and Chevrolet was delighted with the Detroit show's reaction to its Camaro concept, which could be on sale by 2009.

The Challenger is likely to feature Chrysler's Hemi V8 and sit on the same rear-wheel drive platform as the 300C. An even hotter SRT8 version seems probable.
