"In writing" will not "guarantee" that you are going to get your vehicle, nor will putting a deposit down. The most important thing that one can do is find a trusted dealer, preferably one who you have had prior experience with who plays it straight.
When the 300C SRT8 first came out there were tons of complaints on message boards about dealers who had sold promised models out from under them. Many of the people had deposits and written promises but that didn't matter. When cars finally arrived some dealers were selling them to other customers who were offering or willing to pay more $$. They then told the original customer that the vehicle was still on order or came up with a host of other excuses.
I am not sure how the allocation is going to work for the Challenger. If it is anything like the SRT8 models have been then dealers for the most part will have no idea if and when they will be getting vehicles or how many they will be getting. They will tell customers all kinds of stories about production holdups, production quantities and so on.
Your BEST source for accurate production and other type of information on the Challeneger will most likely end up being from trusted "insiders" on various message boards, as it has been with so many models in the past. Your WORST source of information, unfortunately, will be from the dealer/sales staff as most will just tell you what you want to hear or make up stories along the way.
Firm pricing will most likely not be announced until the last minute, slightly before or even after production starts. Hopefully Dodge will launch the Challenger with sufficient quantities to satisfy a reasonable percentage of the initial demand and not launch with as tight of a supply as they have with other vehicles like the SRT8's.
When launched the Challenger is going to be the hottest vehicle on the planet, one can only imagine what some dealers are going to be "asking" for them. The sky is going to be the limit.
