I think the manual is the only way to go with a muscle car.

My 98 Grand Prix GTP has kinda of best of both worlds. I often downshift to either avoid the lag for the tranny to keep up in thinking what I want to do or to limit the amount of gas I need to get it to downshift. (IE if I downshift manually I don't have to give as much gas as I would to force a downshift in D)

As for upshifts, it won't do it. But it will bounce off the govener and bog if you don't. I have learned that 93 MPH is about all 2nd gear is good for.

Oh, and it won't let you do stupid things like drop into 1st if doing 35MPH.
Plus, if you are say in manual 3rd, while it won't upshift, it will downshift automatically to 2nd if its needed for the amount of throttle.

Like I said, to me this is the best of both worlds.

Edit: It however does do a 1-2 shift instead of hitting the limiter when spinning the tires/. But I can smoke the tires for a bit before it shifts. But once 2nd kicks in, you can't keep em spinning much longer.
