Re: Fortune Mag:Backlash Begins
Isn't the Challenger as much a Halo car as anything? Something to get people into the dealership to ogle out, but walk out with interest in say, a Caliber which maybe they hadn't considered really buying before? Also, it is a low production car, based on widely used mechanicals, it isn't much of a risk. Now if this was a ground up effort, or they were aiming for 200k plus a year, i might think they are crazy, but neither is the case and it makes a good business standpoint as it increases LX production, uses widely avail LX parts, and serves as a halo to bring foot traffic into dealerships. It has a good business standpoint, just a bit over this guys head. Cerberus knows it isn't going to save the company, but it's something to get the name out there. Now with the hornet on it's way and the Caliber and Jeep Patriot selling better and better each month, that is a little help. Of course they also realize they are going to have to get their act together and are redoing the interiors on the Caliber, Compass, Patriot for 09 and the Sebring and Avenger are already getting badly needed upgrades and refreshes for 09. This guy has tunnel vision on only 1 aspect and one vehicle and it's not like they dropped everything to pour money into the Challenger or ignored the other things that needed fixed. The Challenger has it's place, as does the Mustang and Camaro.
