I'm not 100% sure of the purpose. Some say it is fuel economy, others say it helps with emissions. Either way it sounds annoying. Here is what it does.

When the car detects that you are driving lightly, it will display a skip-shift indicator. You start of in 1st like normal, but then it forces you to shift straight from 1st to 4th gear by locking out 2nd & 3rd with a solenoid.
At least that is how it was explained to me. If anyone else knows for sure, please correct me if I am wrong.
