Hello Everyone,

On the face of the rotor hub, where the lug studs are, there is a 1/4" ring of metal that the SRT wheels do not cover. That 1/4" ring has rusted on my car. When I look at the wheels my eyes are drawn to that rust everytime.

I'm sure someone like Eastwood makes something that the metal can be painted with. But before I call them, I wonder if anyone here has dealt with this problem.

I need something that would dry fairly quickly (few hours) and that would NOT cause the wheels to glue themselves to that paint.

Any ideas?

It's a cast hub, so after washing it a few times a little rust is always present after oxidization. I got the same, so do my buddies two SRT8's.

Can always paint just the face around the lug nuts with hi temp paint, or buy caliper paint..

I was actually thinking about painting them black and using FCP Hi-Temp brake caliper paint kit, I have bought from xeonmods.com before and probably will again to do this mod.

On day 2 of ownership I pulled my wheels and painted mine with rustolium, grey in color. Looks good and hasnt peeled. I actully used a small brush. Had it from a previous home project.

One-shot pin striping paint can also withstand high temperatures and comes in various colors. Not sure whether it will glue the wheel to the hub. Works well on engines and intake manifolds.

:dunno:Perhaps POWDERCOATING???

My friends and I looking at my car when it was new all spotted the rust ring right away, thinking it kind of cheesey that Chrysler didnt put a decent finish on..

Are these rotors going to be turnable, or will they need replacement when the brake pads go??

Part of the issue with any rotor pant (hub is part of the rotor) is the heat/cool cycles from braking. It is really hard for paint to hold up under those conditions. Even those paints designed for application there need refreshing from time to time. I'm checking the calipers for fade, but I believe they have been coated with an effective paint for their application and the heat incurred is less than the rotors.

This may be another alternative to solve the problem . . . VHT Brake Caliper & Rotor Paint (http://www.cacustomcoatings.com/vhtbrcaropa.html)

And I forgot to mention that aluminum pressed against steel and add water creates electrolysis. This may be another factor affecting the formation of rust where the (aluminum) wheel contacts the (steel) hub - IMHO.

Yep, noticed it day one as soon as I got mine home, last Wed. I asked my dealership about it, they were aware of the rust ring but they said no one has called them about it before (who knows). I have to take her back to get the anti-theft installed and they want to take a look and see if there is something they can do about it. Whether I let them or not depends on if they think they're going to charge me for it.

seriously... why waste your time your driving the car you press the brakes it will rub and will wear down unless your going to garage queen your car unload and load on a trailer i wouldn't waste time money an energy to take off the wheels spray them wait for them to dry an then put the wheels back on. In all honesty no one Goes wow thats a great looking car too bad those rust spots on the inner part of your wheels kills it for me haha. Every car gets them theirs nothing you can really do about it unless you just don't drive it. even then if not garaged rain or water will oxidize on the metal its just what it does.

Yeah I don't see the big deal either. I detail my car out as well as anyone but that really is not an issue.

for our show cars that we take to the auto shows, we bring them in and spray mopar silver paint on the rotor hats, then spray with a matte finish coat, we also do the calipers the same way. on the srt models just do the rotors.

Unless you are taking your car to shows, why bother? No one notices the rust except the car's owner. To the guys who are overly concerned with rust, have you ever looked at the suspension while your car was up on a lift?
You can literally go crazy with this stuff.

I used to have this same rust problem with aftermarket rotors on my Lexus. I solved the problem by getting rotors that were cadmium coated. Problem solved: no more rust.

Wow! Lots of hate for a simple question. I am not talking about the slight ring of rust on the edge of the rotor where the brake pads ride.

I am not talking about any rust that you would have to jack the car up to see or lay down on the ground to see.

This is not a show car or a garage queen.

The opening between the spokes on the SRT wheels is huge. You cannot look at the wheels, calipers, and slotted rotors and not see this rust (at least on my car). All of the rest of the hub assembly is factory painted to avoid getting rusted. They simply stopped short and didn't paint them far enough.

It is the only place I can see rust when walking up to the car. If it doesn't bother you, that's cool. If I can spend an hour or two fixing it, I will.

Thank you to those that offered answers to my question.

I don't think anyones hating on you. An if you get that vibe then I'm sorry. You didn't state that it was a factory flaw and how to fix that from the beginning.

the vibe you were sending out is the ring of rust that occurs from normal day to day driving and breaking that you see. Hope fellow members tips help out! good luck.
