: New Member.....Need Advice for Dual Exhaust!
Pottsfire 05-28-2010, 09:05 AM So, I purchased a beautiful 2010 Challenger SE V6 with 5 miles. Got em to throw in a $1100 moonroof in for free! I want to get rid of the single exhaust and go for a dual exhaust. Question: I heard getting true duals will ultimately reduce performance not to mention its expensive. I want to go ahead and have the dual exhaust look without actually being a "true dual" system. I am having a hard time finding information(Ive looked across the entire internet it seems) on what accessories and parts I will need(i.e. muffler, tips, etc...) I have decided that I want the sound of a flowmaster so that part is figured out. Any info, advice, suggestions on what I need, and actually the process of how one gets the true dual look without actually being a true dual. Sorry for the redundancy. Thanks.
GreatAmerican 05-28-2010, 09:08 AM Welcome aboard! :)
ChallengerPhil 05-28-2010, 10:19 AM Congrats on your purchase Pottfire, I have yet to make mine, LOL!
I've already been resarching this and one thing I would strongly recommend is getting the rear lower valance for the R/T. They are supposedly like, $60-$90 and will have the provisions for dual outlets.
Other than that, THe performance thing... well that's an age old debate and in terms of exhaust, I'd disagree.
What should you go with since they are expensive? Man, I don't know. If I finally can pulla purchase off, I'm getting the MBRP Cool Duals setup. Expensive, but it will hopefully be the last exhaust I stick on the car. If you want just dual pipes? I think I have seen something to that effect... if I find it again I'll give you the link. I could have sworn I saw some sort of dual outlet, single muffler setup.
crater 05-28-2010, 10:34 AM Blastin Bobs has exactly what you want.
Blastin Bob's Fat Pipes (http://www.blastinbob.com/)
If you want to keep it decently quiet and avoid drone go for any of the kits for the 3.5L that have glasspacks. otherwise, pick the Decible level you want and enjoy your Y-pipe dual conversion.
ONTHEFENCE 05-28-2010, 10:49 AM The other choices are Cat Back systems like the Magnaflow 16500, Flowmaster 817459, MBRP has few choices, Pypes has a few choices, and SLP has a dual system. There are probably others.
In order to get "true" duals, you would likely have to get it made at a muffler shop as most aftermarket exhaust systems for the Challenger SE are cat back systems that are not true duals.
Blastin Bob's is a less expensive alternative.
cdhd2001 05-28-2010, 02:50 PM I have the Flowmaster Force II stainless dual exhaust. Kit came with a large 1 in 2 out muffler and 2 resonators with 3'' stainless tips. Comes with a template to cut out the rear valance for the second tip.
Slight rumble at idle, then becomes aggressive with throttle. Sounds about as close to a v8 as a v6 will ever sound. The guys at the muffler shop who installed it were very impressed. Also, no drone inside!
P.S. Kit cost $600 from summit racing.
S/S Dodge 05-28-2010, 03:31 PM i picked up a stock used R/T system from a member here that upgraded his car. then bought the rear valance from the dealer to complete the package. these stock take-off systems can be had from free to about $200.

Omicron 05-28-2010, 04:09 PM I recommend you go with what S/S Dodge did, above.
toofart 05-28-2010, 04:14 PM The stock R/t exhaust system is heavy. I'd do what cdhd2001 did -- flowmaster 2 outlet.
Omicron 05-28-2010, 04:25 PM Yes, a good muffler shop can always do well for you. I was looking at catbacks for my new Avalanche recently, and the best price I could find was almost $500 for one with dual pipes exiting on either side. My local muffler guy did a BETTER hand made one with a Magnaflow 1 into 2 can + dual outlets + dual 18" x 4" chrome angle cut tips for $200.
Best thing about a stock exhaust off an R/T or SRT8 is that it is inexpensive. Could probably be found for FREE.

exactly, and the factory 6-speed system isn't all that heavy. those tiny mufflers have to be the lightest ones out there.
Omicron 05-28-2010, 04:53 PM exactly, and the factory 6-speed system isn't all that heavy. those tiny mufflers have to be the lightest ones out there. And if too quiet, you can always remove the resonators.
Pottsfire 05-29-2010, 08:24 AM Thanks for the advice......I appreciate the quick replies. I am taking all the info to mind and will soon make a decision and will update as soon as it's done
chdh2001-- 2or 3 chambers on the muffler?
Pottsfire 05-29-2010, 08:29 AM S/S Dodge......
I love the look of that exhaust. Did you notice any loss of power, more back pressure after installing them. Let me know how you like the R/T exhaust on your ride. Also , it seems that it would be fairly easy to install them...is that the case.
Thanks man....

deserthorizons 05-29-2010, 11:26 AM Here is another option for dual exhaust..
http://pic80.picturetrail.com/VOL970/4199859/22112577/365954281.jpg
You can order these from JCWhitney.com
These are the 82" x 3 1/2" sidepipes.
Less than $300.00 shipped to the door
~$150 for labor to install..
Maybe another $25.00 in misc. stuff to do it..
guide for install here: Sidepipe Install (http://challenger09.s5.com/photo4.html)

there is NO loss in power. i believe the stock 5.7L 6-speed system is just perfect for the 3.5L motor. it has a nice rumble at idle, sweet sounding at cruising speeds and zero drone. it is perfect in every way.
the install is a direct bolt-on after i modified the H-pipe. i cut off the 2 1/4" clamp end of the stock Y-pipe, cut off the 2 1/2" clamp end of the H-pipe, and then welded the 2 1/4" clamp ends on the H-pipe. now it is a direct bolt-on. you will also need two rubber isolators and two left hand exhaust hangers. i ordered those and the rear valance from the dealer.
the 6-speed exhaust makes the 3.5L sound like the factory high-performance motor that it is, and not like a minivan.
however, if you're looking for that super low drone sound or the raspy tone of a tuner car, this system isn't for you.
S/S Dodge 05-29-2010, 11:47 AM those sidepipes are cool, but anything from JCWhitneys wouldn't last a year or two in the Chicagoland area. the road salt would have their way with them and win.
deserthorizons 05-29-2010, 12:22 PM Yes, but the OP is in Georgia..
Pottsfire 05-29-2010, 12:51 PM S/S thanks for the description. I have heard a few V6 challengers with that R/T stock exhaust online and it does sound pretty sick. After talking to you as well, I'm gonna go with that system. Now....where to purchase a used one. I posted a WTB for a used R/T exhaust so maybe I'll get a hit. Do dealerships have those on hand usually?
-Oh also did you replace any parts of the system or is it true stock straight from the R/T
S/S Dodge 05-29-2010, 04:31 PM S/S thanks for the description....-Oh also did you replace any parts of the system or is it true stock straight from the R/T
the R/T has two different exhaust systems:
the auto one , 2 1/4" tubing, X-pipe, and a single suitcase style muffler..
the 6-speed one, 2 1/2" tubing, H-pipe, and tiny individual mufflers.
mine is a completely stock 6-speed system.
DADNSONCAR 05-30-2010, 01:25 AM I recently put the flowmaster kit on mine also. You can find it on the flowmaster site then shop around for a better price. Like CdHd said it has a rumble on start but when you get on it for a '6' its sounds pretty damn nice. Im happy with it anyway, next you need to go for the CAI. Be ready to be stared at, this car gets so many looks its incredible.
2emes 05-31-2010, 02:42 PM I've just read in other post that the R/T exhaust system has X-pipes if it's for automatic Challengers and H-pipes if it's for manual ones. Is this true?.
If it's true, why then people with SE don't just fit the one for automatics if X-pipes are proved to be much better than H-pipes?.
2emes 05-31-2010, 02:52 PM Yes, sorry, DGibson, I messed your photos with the S/S Dodge ones. He fitted H-pipes RT exhaust system.

I love the sound! Plus the FM kit was "made" for the 3.5L and even has an increase in power on a dyno (FM has videos and graphs).
wickedmpulse 06-02-2010, 07:39 PM I have the Flowmaster Force II kit as well-I have a short video clip somewhere on this forum...
Greg55_99 06-14-2010, 02:00 PM I guess I'll dive into this one as well. I have a 2010 SE and have located a 6-speed SRT dual exhaust. I've heard some people say don't use them because they're too big. Other's say they've noticed no difference in performance on a V6.
Any thoughts on this?
Greg
S/S Dodge 06-14-2010, 02:11 PM i would use it. you have enough back pressure with the stock mids and converters.
Omicron 06-14-2010, 02:34 PM It's going to look better It's going to sound better It won't hurt, and might help your performanceWhat's not to like? ;)
ENTERPRISE 06-14-2010, 05:10 PM It would be great if some 1 who is planning to get dual exhaust , predator or any other performance modification to run their stock S/E through the 1/4 first and again after any changes so that we can see the results. From what I have read on this forum dual exhaust hurts S/E performance but I have not seen a before and after 1/4 run to prove if dual exhaust hurts or helps.
Omicron 06-14-2010, 05:30 PM Search and ye shall learn. It's been done before, and you'll probably find discussion about it in this forum. Happy hunting!
walnetto 06-15-2010, 09:01 PM S/S Dodge:
I see from your install pics that the left pipe does not have the insulation barrier that the right has. I thought I read a while back that if you put dual exhaust on an SE that you have to add some insulation from the gas tank? I want the dual X too. I can see it if it will be around $200 or so. I'd even take the R/T automatic. Just so I have the chrome tips sticking out the back. Anyone listening to my posts over the last month will probably tell me to go get the red R/T on the local showroom and be done with it. :scratchhead:
Omicron 06-16-2010, 05:57 AM Here ya go gents, in our For Sale section. Can't beat the price! :)

Why don't you post some pics of the car which turn heads, would love to see it or a vid of the sound perhaps?
ehornung 06-23-2010, 12:42 PM I'm happy with my exhaust system now... I had a local exhaust guru do a dual Magnaflow custom system with a little "H" pipe linking the two, and then he used a resonator on each side to keep the sound subtle and low... it's quiet with just the slightest low-end rumble, unless you floor it. Then it sounds better than a 6 should. I bought the RT rear fascia and RT tips so it would look stock. I got so many ideas from reading these posts.. just thought I'd post a pic.
