why is it on some threads the width changes and the sentence can now expand way wide and have to scroll to side with mouse. Other threads are just fine, sizing stays within window. Is there a setting to stop this at my end or is it a setting at the senders end?

You need to set it to automatically re-size images.
If you don't have this set and someone posts a huge picture it will stretch the page boundaries.
