My girlfriend's Lexus was broken into yesterday afternoon when she was visiting her mom's trailer park(And she apologized to me after I've said time and time again I don't feel safe leaving my car there for any amount of time). They stole her school bag which had her books and laptop in it, her zune mp3 player. They also stole my creative zen mp3 player from the center console as well as her bluetooth, some sunglasses and a pure silver cross necklace her ex bought in Iraq for a few hundred bones.
I stopped on my way home from work to wait for the police with her. We waited around 3 hours and they finally showed up and did the report. We went home and went to bed for work today.
She called her car insurance today as she has full coverage so she assumed she'd be fine. Turns out it only covers theft of items attached to the car, no personal items contained within. She is totally bummed out but they suggested since she lives with me calling my home owner's insurance. Is this something it would actually cover, and more importantly would it have to go by the deductible? if so that is 1,000 bucks and the value of items was maybe a little bit more than that at most, so it wouldn't make sense to file the claim.
She works near full time at starbucks and is a full time student so she can't really afford to just go buy a new laptop and replace all her books. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

crater - as far as I know - it would be her MOM's homeowners insurance that would apply - the site where the theft OCCURRED - not yours
but I aint no agent so I could very well be wrong about that

Not sure if they even have any(if you even can on a trailer), but good point. She was also parked in visitor public parking for the trailer park.. so who knows how that works.

My homeowner's policy covers up to a certain percentage of the policy total.
Might I suggest you read your policy and see if you can find the details before you call your agent? Much like it pays to understand your car warranty instead of just taking the dealer's opinion at given some point in time.

Go to the local Pawn Shop, check for her computer. If you find it there contact the Police and see if they can recover it for you. If you have the Police report and serial number for the computer the Pawn Shop should do the right thing and assist the Police in identifying the person who pawned the stolen computer. I’m sure Pawn Shop rules vary from state to state, but once the Pawn Shop is notified that the item is stolen they can not sell it.
Do not use home owners insurance that could cause a price increase on future policies, home or vehicle. Hopefully you can get all your stolen items back.

In most instances, the mobile home park is owned by a company that leases the spaces to the individual tenants. If that's the case, you can submit a claim to the mobile home park for the loss and see if they turn it over to their insurance carrier. You may sue the park in small claims court for the loss if they were negligent in protecting the park, i.e., an automatic gate that never closes or is broken, improper lighting, poorly trained security if any, etc.
What kind of laptop did she lose?
Also, check craigslist for the lost items. Many items from smash and grabs end up on craigslist and sell quickly. Not really advised that you go out to meet someone who may have just broken into your car though.

I bet theres no coverage for her on your homeowners policy, she would need to be a home owner herself to have coverage. She probably needs to up her car insurance to cover personal effects, seems weird they would not cover that stuff, she did have a loss.

It was nothing terribly expensive, just an HP netbook.. but the highest priced one(think it was like 400 new) for the best battery etc. Expensive enough for a student/starbucks worker. She is giving all the serial info she has to the police, but they said they doubt they'll find anything. Trailer park doesn't even have a fence or security.. its not like an elderly double wide community which my grandparents live in out in palm desert.. its just poor people in yucaipa.
It sucks, but she just learned an expensive lesson about leaving stuff in the car as it doesn't look like we'll be able to do much.

We both have full coverage from allstate. I have their platinum package. Called my agent to verify, they will never cover personal items. Standard across the board for all companies ... no one seems to know that though. *shrug*
