: Brand New R/T plus: leak and weird burnt smell?
wopar 04-30-2012, 01:59 AM Hello all!
i am so excited as i just drove home (after driving around for 80 miles that is...:rocker: ) my brand new 2012 R/T plus Blackberry Pearl! YES!
However i have 2 questions:
1-I noticed a weird burnt plastic/oil smell after i parked it...nothing extremely strong, but noticeable. I come from a small car so i am completely uninformed when it comes to muscle cars and how/what they should smell like...
2- it leaks water or something like it: after i parked it i noticed it under the car... doesn't smell and it looks/feels like water to the touch....not oil or coolant. Could it be the A/C? or maybe the fact that the dealer had the car washed before i took it home?
thanks in advance for your help!
W.
EDIT: both issues gone after a few 100 miles. Thanks all!
war machine xxl 04-30-2012, 03:21 AM How many miles are on it? I don't think you should be in panic mode just yet. It could just be the engine breaking itself in. Be sure to check the fluid levels (engine oil, coolant etc.) after the engine has had a chance to cool off considerably. I'm pretty sure 5W-30 is the recommended oil for that engine just in case it needs a "sip" or two.
I would suggest that you continue to monitor it, and if it is still noticeable after a day or two, I wouldn't hesitate to bring it back to the dealer, just to have some peace of mind. Just remember that good old warranty that Chrysler is trying so hard to keep intact from would-be car tuners.... like myself. :)
mattyj724 04-30-2012, 04:31 AM most likely the A/C dripping. If you had it running or on auto.
Sandshar 04-30-2012, 04:48 AM ^ that plus all this sounds pretty normal, haven't exp it but have read similar stories on these forums..
r/t zombie 04-30-2012, 09:29 AM Agree, sounds like A/C. As far as the smell, by all means investigate, but with a brand new vehicle there is various things with new paint and other coatings which will burn off in time. If you can't spot any leaks, other than the a/c, this is most likely what you're smelling.
HTown RT 04-30-2012, 10:17 AM 346 Miles on my 2012 RT and the break in smell gets better...no worries.
wopar 04-30-2012, 12:14 PM Thank you all!
the car has about 80 miles on it...6 miles when i drove it off the lot.
I am beginning to think the leak is either the consequence of the dealership carwash or A/C.... no biggie.
I'll keep en eye on the smell and hopefully it'll stabilize the more i drive it.
I won't let this spoil my happiness...first new car i ever bought!
Thanks again to all of you for the replies.

wopar 05-09-2012, 10:04 AM All good!
after about 10 days and 500 miles (!!!) everything looks and smells nice.
Thanks all for your help and replies!
Rumblefish50 05-09-2012, 10:45 AM Wierd burning smells can come from a lot of different places.
My wife called me once driving down the road with the kids and said there was a strong burning smell inside the car. I told her to pull over and once stopped she said it was getting worse, so I had her shut down the car and get the kids out. After going to rescue her it turned out to be a plastic bag that she had run over. It stuck to the exhaust, melted, and got sucked in by the a/c. I felt kind of dumb for going full red alert "pull over and get out of the car" on her.
Then again I've seen two cars that just combusted and burned to a crisp by the side of the road. One of them took less than 10 minutes from beginning of the burning smell to being fully engulfed in flames. It was a Celica, I know the owner.
You just never know.
Congrats on your new ride.
When my car was new 6 months ago, I was smelling like burn smell, it is something usual.
As for the water, it is defenitely from the AC.
To be confident, take it to the dealer for quick checkup.
BlueMeanie 05-09-2012, 02:22 PM More often ordors like this can be attributed to the catalytic converter, especially if you've been running hard and park in an enclosed area.

Yahooligan 05-09-2012, 04:42 PM The burning smell with new cars is actually the anti-rust coating burning off of the exhaust tubing, the pipes are lightly coated to prevent surface rust while in storage before being built into the exhaust systems and installed on the cars. Perfectly normal and it will go away.
moparcrazed 05-09-2012, 07:05 PM I have a 2012 R/T. It's normal, don't worry about it. ENJOY IT !!
