This mod is simple. You order the 6speed shifter handle, boot, and trim assembly from mopar, and remove the handle(or advertise that your looking for just the boot and trim like i did). Use a regular screwdriver and gently pry between shift knob and chroms piece at bottom of knob. Push chrome piece down and pull on knob. Then use the screwdriver to gently pry around the chrome ring of the shift plate working your way around it then lift it out of your way. Then you must pull the shift plate up(takes a little finess) unplug the light conected to it and remove plate from console. Take new boot and trim and snap it right back into the same area as the old one and reinstall knob. All done.

I loved doing this on my car, i added the mopar pistol grip shifter from speedlogix with it. Love the set up. i also Plasti dipped my shifter trim surround and the cup holder/centre console plate. The fake Carbon fibre suuuucked.

hilarious...
One more thing is required though...the smile on your face that comes from rowing through those gears.

Is does look like a manual to the untrained eye, not sure why you would do it though, unless you're embarrassed to drive an auto?

After you get done whipping someones ass at the track, when they look into the car and it appears to be an manual, you will be the shift king.

I know a lot of us that do the mod just hate that ugly @$$ shift plate... and think this mod ties the interior together a little.
At least thats my opinion and why i did it, and why a couple others did it lol

Ahaha. I was going to go about just sewing it tight around the shifter shaft (i cant sew..) so decided to screw that... I just tucked a decent bit of the boot under its self, folding it down the shaft (and this is where it gets pretty ghetto. BUT TRUST ME, IT WORKS BEAUTIFULLY, nice and tight. and i can take the boot off with scissors if i wanted to. But to sum it up i used the only thing i could find at 11pm in my garage... Zap Straps (the smaller kind) to go around the shifter boot and the shaft to "bind" it TIGHTLY to the shaft... It may take 1-2 times to figure out the exact amount the boot has to be tucked but its a cheap easy fix. It gets easier once the boot stretches a bit and loosens up a bit too anyways. lol

On a side note... If your looking for "oh that looks pretty under that boot" then its not for you to go this route. I just went for function instead of looking pretty when you lift up that skirt. lol

Aha i know eh?

I used black ones to kind of blend in a little better with it... I think i used 4-5... 4 to layer all the way down the tucked in area. And 1-2 more to Cross across them all. All tightened right the F up.

As for the top of the boot, on my 6 speed I put in the Hurst pistol grip shifter from Mr Norm's Garage, it supplied a zip tie with it but it kept coming off on hard shifting so what i did was found a rubber grommet from hurst for a mustang application which fits perfect in the boot and looks correct. Google Hurst Shifter Grommet, I'm sorry i didn't keep the part # Mopar might also sell it with their 6 speed shifter.

I dont see why the 6 speed guys are ripping on this mod. A shifter boot in an automatic is a pretty common feature in more luxurious European models. It does tidy up the inside while doing away with the hideous shift plate. I say thumbs up...probably doing the same myself.

I say to each his own, but there is a difference between making it look better and making it look like a manual. Feels like upbadging to me. Not knocking the mod or trying to start anything.. just answering your question.

Very nice. I wish I could get that done on my V6. Well, I have the auto with the trick shift. I play around with the shifter every so often. I love to do it when I approach a stop sign and the other people are saying "wow" to me.

And as far as the comment of upbadging.....
It used to be a manual was standard equipment.
And an automatic was the upgrade.
So it would be downbadging.
"Just sayin' "

i agree .. auto is more expensive than manual.. so i dont think is upbadging.. besides.. i would do it because i like the look of a short shifter, but i didnt want a manual 700hp car (my dream one day lol)

My 6spd in 09 was more than the auto...it depends on the year...just to be accurate that is. Also "short shifter" refers to the shift "throw", not the height of the shifter, shift knob or the boot if present. If I had an auto, I wouldn't be too concerned about the look of the shifter as much as making sure I had the paddles on the column. That in my opinion is the only way to go, they're a blast if you're coordinated enough to utilize that awesome design.

I got luck and got a great deal from a member on here,

You can get the boot and trim online, i don't know the part number but its for the 6speed challenger. I saw one on eBay for about 130.00, the shifter was the more expensive part 175 with free shipping was the cheapest i found it, again ebay

Do you have to replace the shifter also? Or can you just replace the trim and boot? Do you have to remove the plate for clearance?

I know it's been awhile since you did this, but did you take the whole white plate off or just the black piece on top? I am having a hard time keeping the new trim in place, keeps popping off.

Yeah the inspiration of this mod isnt the embarrassment of owning an auto (I love my auto). But the fact that the shift plate looks like something that should be in a minivan is pretty good motivation. Id be nice if Hurst made us auto guys a proper Pro-Matic shifter! In time I suppose...

Bought the shift boot (assembly from the dealer, this includes a boot and the shifter trim and the shifter, i think i got it around mid or high 100s. blah i know, but worth it imo.) and I got the shifter from Speedlogix.

I recommend trying to find a totalled challenger 6 speed in a yard or for sale and get the boot off that, itd be cheaper. You could also buy it from Steve White Motors in the US for cheaper than Canadian Dealers, but youll need to pay shipping and handling, duty fees and canadian shipping. lol

The Install was easy, as i went the easy route of making the shifter shaft hole in the boot tight around the shifter shaft the easy way. ZIP TIES. (Dont judge, it works and i love it.) Its really easy, I did it parked in my street using a butter knife to pry up the centre console plate and shifter trim. The rest is just unscrew and pull off, and then put back together with the shifter and shift boot. I WILL SAY THE SHIFTER was the most annoying part if you ask me, Getting it to settle down to the proper hight was a major BEEETCH. Its a really tight fit (its never coming off) so you gotta really hammer the thing on there.

Ill include pictures of the Install, and of the instructions that i used and got off here.
