today, i was doing some spirited driving on the highway and when i got over 110 there was a loud flapping sound coming from rear passenger side . i slowed down and the sound stopped. so i exited highway and pulled over thinking my tire was coming apart. i went to rear fender well and noticed the bottom of wheel well lineing was melted from friction. i think when i got to high speed the wind was pushing the liner agains tire. the liner on both sides is very flimsy also. anbody else have a similar problem :dunno:

You aren't the first one to report this. Happened to me too - at 140 MPH (on a closed racing track of course). Sounded like a major flapping/resonating sound. Scare the crap out of me. Did it once, hasn't done it since.

i am glad i am not the only one, the wheel well liners are very flimsey, i climbed underneath and it looks like the only way to solve the problemis to trim away some of the liner. these cars are supposed to be built for speed :eek2:

On the charger, the liners have some sound deafening material. At 140 I couldn't hear anything. The 392 Challenger sure has some noisy liners last i remember... even at low speads. I cringed every time I went over a patch of gravel.

I have been wondering what that flapping noise was... but didnt think anything of it at the time... as far as gravel goes, I park in gravel at certain places and yes its very noisy

You know. I've been wondering if there is some sort of aftermarket one. They are so flimsy and I feel like a lot of the noise I hear come from the wheel wells liner. Wish they had solid aluminum ones with rubber sprayed surface. I've seen dodge rams with the solid aluminum wheel wells. Some sort of rubber lining over it would help decrease rock and debris noise.

I have had a few customers come in with the same problem. What our service department ended up doing was ordering some new liners and with one had to custom fit the liner so that this problem did not continue. We forward this issue back to the factory so hopefully they fixed this problem in the later models.

Had this issue with mine early on. Took it to the dealer and they fixed it under warranty.

Ditto from the exact speed to the crap effect. I coasted to a stop--seemed like about 3 miles. The noise stopped about 80 mph. When I looked at the liner, it was not retained by the clips on the outside edge, so I wedged it into the clips. A later excursion at 162 showed no problem. I assumed it was not installed correctly at Brampton.

What was the fix?

They just added more clips, like stated above. The Tech said they had a lot of complaints about it. Mine happened at about 80mph. After the fix, have had it up to 120+ with no issues.

stopped by dealer today, svc manager and myself looked at some challengers on the lot and they all have the same flimsy wheel well liners. some are almost rubbing the tires. he said it is probably a design flaw and they could try and zip tie it back :slant:
