: Replacing only the mufflers... Better sound ?

I am considering just replacing the mufflers as I live near a borla shop... Would this help my idle sound? I wanna the low end muscle car growl. I'm not even interested in a performance gain hence not needing the full cat back . Would slapping on some nice borla muffler improve my sound ... Any recommendations ?! Thanks

If replacing the central suitcase muffler, then yes, I would say some free-flow mufflers will make the idle sound quite nice! :) The stock suitcase might as well be called a v8-cloaking box because it pretty well stealths any sonic indicator that you have a v8.

your most bang for the buck will be replacing the rear resonators with glasspacks (Blasting bob styled)...or you can go to your favorite muffler shop and have them put 12" glasspacks behind the tips ($125max)...the mufflers, even the suitcase, is good stuff...if you have a 2011 and later you will have 2 standard turbo mufflers these are good, the piping is good, its the resonator that sucks. If you have an automatic car be very careful messing with the resonator (rear muffler)...you could well find yourself with a bad drone situation...

That black Challenger in that Borla video is MEAN!!! Needs to be in a horror movie - chasing some teenagers. Just plain Nasty!

OP - I removed my middle muffler/resonators and replaced the back muffler/resonators with Flowmaster 40's for about $300. Sounds like the Borla video. You may want to try just removing either the middle or back muffler/resonators and see what you think before dishing out +$1500.

I have the Flowmaster American Thunders and the sound improvement with just those on was dramatic and I loved them.....for a while. I have a manual transmission and I was told I wouldn't get the dreaded DRONE with these, but once they broke in the DRONE came on strong. My daughter absolutely loves my car, but hates riding in the back seat now because of the DRONE.

I will be replacing these as soon as I can with Corsa Extreme, I should have saved up the money and did the right thing from the start and I wouldn't be regretting the purchase like I am now.

I've asked everywhere, on forums and at performance shops, and the people in the know all say the same thing....go with the Corsa and never look back.

I too replaced the middle mufflers with 40 series flow masters and had the back resonators removed with new tips for 400$.

Sounds great no real drone

I really wish I knew why mine has bad drone then, what I researched before I installed them was that people had experienced drone with the automatics, but not with the manual transmission like mine. It really blows because I really like the sound otherwise.

Has anyone left the resonators in and replaced the mufflers with flow master super 10 series? Would that be over the top loud? 12' SRT

The pypes violator for the auto is the best bang for the buck, about $500, no drone and sounds great. I have the corsa xtreme and the pypes sounds better to me. With a 6 speed just cut off the resonator and it's perfect.

I would not expect it would be overly loud. The resonators and the mufflers tend to share near equal duty at overall sound attenuation. So if you replace the mufflers with Super 10's, it won't be much louder than what the resonators would do all by themselves (technically, the "muffling" of sound would still be additive with the combo of Super-10's + resonators).

Put simply, it won't be as loud as if the Super 10's were by themselves, and it won't be as quiet as a fully stock system. It will be somewhere in-between...maybe enough to stand-out as clearly aftermarket, but certainly not shout-at-the-devil loud.

I had the suitcase mufflers replaced with the flowmaster super 10's and the resonators replaced with straight pipe on my '12 RT auto. First of all it sounds incredible for most of the rpm band, but is LOUD! Haven't gotten any complaints and everyone loves it...for short drives. The bad part, and it is pretty bad, is a resonance around 2200rpm. Every time I accelerate thru 2200rpm it is extremely loud in the cab, but quickly goes back to the awesome screaming v8. On the highway at 70 mph the resonance is constant and is very loud inside. At 75 mph or higher the resonance is gone but even the smallest application of throttle makes it almost unbearable inside. Gonna replace with the solo Mach x soon.

Thanks guys. Just put dynatech headers on last weekend. Made a change in sound but now I'm looking for more after hearing my buddies Roush stang.

So what would be the best route on a 12' SRT with long tube headers for re-utilizing the factory piping and getting a corsa extreme or ATAK sound with minimum drone? Or is it even worth it cause I'm close to pulling the trigger on one the two cat back systems I mentioned.

Never mind. CARid had the 392 ATAK Borla system for 1300 so why not. Guess Borla finally stopped wanting 1800 for it.

for what it is worth... I have a 6 speed, and removed the back resonators and replaced the mid mufflers with Borlas. The sound is subtle at idle, there is some drone in 5th and 6th, but at WOT it you know there is something different. I like this configuration because I don't want to attract attention from the Man...
Cat back systems are great, and if mean sound is what you are after, there you go...
I want performance without attracting attention... no me gusta tickets...

Powerstick mufflers. REAL Chambered exhaust. I have 4 on my car.

Why not just put on high flow cats...less drone and more power.

How about some sound clips?
Also, 6spd or auto?

I had super 44s with reso in place it was a upgrade over stock. Slide good at idle, and very very lil drone! Now I cut reso's off and straight pipe with MDS disabled! It's exactly what it should sound like. It has a lil drone but nothing that doesn't make you want to drive it!

Put an x pipe on my rt and removed the mufflers and replaced them with two single chamber flowmasters. I get compliments all the time on the sound. Very happy with it

I just put on Blastin Bobs reso delete sraight pipes on my 392 and love it. I have an automatic and at highway speed there isn't drone but at slight accel it can be loud. I don't have an issue with it but some do. If you go to bb's website they have sound clips. Good luck:blueblob:

I just bought my 2012 RT auto,

So which which muffler would sound best with the least amount of drone? Corsa? I was thinking of putting on a K&N air filter also.

Would I even feel the difference in HP go up? with just adding these 2 upgrades?

I wouldn't waste my money on a K&N, especially so considering the factory airbox flows just as well as a CAI. I stopped using K&N filters when I discovered a layer of fine dust coating the intake tube.

I have the Blastin' Bobs on mine and am seriously considering going with the Corsa Sport in the near future.

As for HP increase, I wouldn't expect any change. The factory intake and exhaust are quite good.

I had bought and installed a K&N replacment filter. The growl changed a lil on idle and when driving , Has a lil of a rumble on the bottom of the car. I can feel now. It was really to quite all stock.

loving my blasting bob's magnaflow perf glasspacks which replace the stock mufflers. sound great at wot, BUT there is noticeable drone when cruising in the lower rpms...

and i agree about the k&n intakes, overpriced and their hp claims are offensive lol
