I can not quote a source, other than say, if the gain is similar to the gains on the 392, than yes. A couple of 10ths of a second. This A8 is worlds better than my A5. (My 5.7 was a stick, so, I can not speak to that question.
Either way, it is great!
Tom.
That is not really a fair test.
You are clearly a driver.
My SRT 392 took thousands of dollars of mods to get near yours, stock. So why is yours so much faster than mine? Drivers.
Congrats on your skill!
Tom.
This has been beat to death already. The A8 folks say it is superior and faster. However, they are just claims at this point with nothing consistent. There are guys with 14 SRTs running 12.3x-12.4x with timeslips as proof. If I had an A8 I would want it to be faster or quicker than an A5 but I am not seeing a Wowing difference between the two. I think the A8 advantages are 95% driveability and an improvement in efficiency.
I drive these cars for a living, my butt dyno says the A8 is slightly faster especially in the V6.
I read before the A8 is about a HALF second faster than the A5.
The A8 keeps the RPM's higher per shift, common sense says it's faster.
It also has to spend more time shifting between gears...
In the ancient days, a lot of guys felt a 3 speed (manual) was faster than a 4 speed cuz you had one less shift to worry about making properly.
On a low-torque engine, like a Japanese V6, an 8 speed makes lots of sense. On a high-torque engine, like a 6.4L, I'm not so sure.
Faced with the choice, I'd still take the 8 speed...I just am not sure it is gonna give a faster quarter mile time. Or if it does, it might be due to a super-low first gear that help get the car out of the hole faster.
BTW my previous car, a 2007 Lexus, had the first production 8 speed auto....
These cars shift in about 0.2 seconds. That certainly doesn't mean you lose 0.2 seconds every time it shifts. Watch 2 cars racing side by side and listen to when one shifts, it loses nothing noticeable compared to the one not shifting (talking about these A8s). The advantage in the A8 is in the gear ratio when launching and also since the gears are closer together (compared to the A5) you stay higher in the power curve when your rpm drops.
Actually I don't care about theories. I would like to see some actual times. I can't find any. Why are the RT guys not hitting the strip or are they just keeping the times a secret?
I don't know if there's an advantage with the A8 vs the A5 at the drag strip at WOT. That said, there is less of a deadspot for street WOT runs when already moving. This may be perceived and may not translate to better performance, but I enjoy driving the A8 significantly more than the A5.
I have a 2015 RT and my friend has a 2012 RT. He has a CAI and running straight pipe. I only have a Borla ATAK cat back system. I beat him every time. I'll try to upload the video.
