It's a 12 second bracket, meaning running any faster than 12.00 and you're disqualified.
Daily drivers only, they check for full interior, DOT tires, and current registration and insurance.
It was canceled twice for rain already, but this Friday it looks like the weather will probably hold up.
On street tires my car has a best time of 12.14 seconds at 114 mph. That was with great weather, near sea level DA. I haven't checked the DA forecast, but it's doubtful the weather will be that nice. It's supposed to be about 80° and it's always humid here. On the flipside this time I'm running Mickey Thompson drag radials.
Theoretically if you can get a perfect reaction time and run a 12.00 you will be unbeatable. I'm guessing there's going to be about 20 cars participating, so statistically it will be tough to beat everyone, but I think I have a fair shot as I should be running low 12's.
It's $20 to enter. Second-place gets your $20 back. First place gets the rest of the money. It would be nice to win the whole thing but I just hope I have a good showing and don't get bumped on my first race.
Its not sandbagging unless he's got a 10 second car & is running in a 12.0 Index ....
In Index or Bracket you never want to take too much stripe or you could break out..
Called common sense... & going rounds...
Exactly....... called cheating when you know your car will go faster than the specified times you say also know as sand bagging. I see it all the time when I race or get in a bracket race. tap tap tap = sandbagger.
Just be careful out there OP and watch the guys that tap their lights frequently is all. Wont take long to figure it out especially when money is involved.
WHAT!?? haha! That can't be..
How can they run a bracket race?
Even tight dialers who cut a great light will tap the brakes so not to take the stripe by too much against someone who was late or sleeping....
You can just as easily lay off the accelerator the last 50 feet or so as well. Ive seen them do that too. They pass me up then let off in the end beating me by a fender or a little more as Im catching back up.
They dont disqualify you where I race but honestly they should.
I'm going to give it my all regardless. If I lose because I hit 11's I'll be happy about that. I'm not trying to manipulate the system for cash, just run a good race and have fun.
Not sure yet what my car can do on Mickey Thompsons, nor what the DA will be.
With it warming up it will be pretty tough to hit the 11's but you should see anywhere from a 12.1 to 12.4 consistently.
I race with twp other Scat owners and we are all in that range most of the time.
Have fun, smoke some tires, and shoot for that 11!
Wow I didnt know you needed skill to drag race kazman. Nice to know and thank you for advice.
All in fun bro. Sand baggers and everything else that goes with it.
My opinion I don't like sandbaggers. Technically it's not cheating as long as they follow the rules but I think it's classless. I would honestly rather enter a non-money tournament. I'm in it for the fun of going up against other cars that are within my league. I'd rather not race against a 10 second car that's tap tap tapping the brakes so he can beat me by a fender trying to get a payday.
Hopefully your DR's stick. I had that problem with my Nittos and it was hit and miss with them so I went with slicks. Although the weather was bad with heat and humidity I was running a 1.8 and 1.9 60fts on every pass and hooked every time.
12.2 to 12.5 faster to slower as the day went on. The DA and heat slows us down for sure.
Good luck and I hope you can show those boys why a Mopar is something to reckon with. The 392 has earned some respect for sure.
Stay as shallow as possible, or in other words, bump in SLOWLY until your full staged.
Once both bulbs are lit STOP there..
That will help your ET a little...
Another 1500 DA you'll slow up about a 1/10th but with DR's, you might pick up .3, so you may be in 11.90 territory...
PERFECT!
*PS:
IF you're running too quick in time shots, you can try to stage DEEP (knock out the top bulb)..
This will slow your ET down by about .08, but its easier to RED light.....
I stage DEEP all the time for a better R/T
All this talk about sandbagging... The majority of classes in the NHRA are either bracket or index. The winners in these classes have cars that are more capable than the number they run. Then they tune the car (read, slow it down) to run the number. They need to have enough power on tap to run the index at Bandemere and Atco.
If I'm showing up to this event with a 12.1 car, I'm afraid of the guy that turns 11.90's
That said, with drag radials, you are probably now the one to be feared.
The advice here is good. Use the brakes while still in the throttle, that way you'll recover quicker if you need to get back in it. Have fun. Index racing is a fun game.
I got a few practice runs in and got rained out again. Moved until Friday, forecast says rain, after that it will get moved to Sunday. Terrible terrible luck so far.
My practice runs were a bit strange. DA was about 1550 feet, and my first practice run was 12.2xx at 114 mph! My 60 foot was 1.89 seconds. What the hell woke my car up?
I have an A8 and I kept upping the launch rpm, never experiencing spin or wheel hop but yet never improving my 60 foot time. I even launched at 2200 RPM, release brake while stomping gas and I still got a 1.90 60 foot. This was with the traction control full off.
Either there's actually wheelspin but I can't feel it on the drag radials, or the computer is doing something to bog my engine down on lunch.
DA kept climbing to somewhere mid to high 1600s. My first two practice runs were 12.2's, after that if heat soak got me to 12.4's.
I set the Mickey Thompsons to 19 PSI. I didn't bother deflating the more because I could not get them to spin or hop on the launch. I just wish upping the RPM would help my 60 foot times.
Are you doing a burnout until you see lots of smoke? You should be able to hear or feel if your tires are spinning IMO. The M/Ts seem to stick hard for me, but I'm up in elevation and a little down on power because of it...
Good news is your car is running better than you thought it would
I'm not surprised by your results. Your times are pretty much what I expected. I have a stone stock scat pack A8 with MT drag radials and have 150+ runs on the car and I'm an experienced bracket racer. Your ET and 60" mirror my car.
Here ya go my IMP lol
1. you ain't spinning the M/T's
2. the staging position is critical both north south and east west. you need to be exactly in the same spot
3. taking driver error out of the equation I think either some part of traction control is sill on or the car slows down when water temp hits 217. This can happen during the burnout. I need to pay more attention to water temp just before I stage the car. I have an .04 ET difference I'm chasing. Crazy how small the numbers get when bracket racing.
4. The amount of brake pressure effects how the car launches. I posted in this thread that skill is needed. Got a lol. Anyway put your left foot heal on the floor and use the area just below our toes to hold the brakes. Almost lifting your foot up 90 degrees and the brake. Lilt off the brake using you leg. At the same time stomp the gas. In bracket racing you need to control all the variables and so everything the same. You can't slip the clutch or feather the gas the same every run.
5. like I stated you need to do all the tricks to run a 12.0 index. Up the air pressure front and back 50 lbs front and as high as you can go before spinning. On a loose track I spin at 16lbs but on a prepped track can go as high as 21llbs.
6. This is huge bit of info. Everyone here is into DA and how it quickens or slows DA. Our cars are more prone to changes in humility. I make my calculated runs from VP (vapor pressure ok humility) rather than DA. Yo-El and Collector96 on the corvette side can dial dead on using the weather station I have found these cars (like my 95 firebird) act a bit differently.
Lights are critical in bracket racing. Psyopgoat if you can post your time slips maybe I can help with your RT.
The folks who ***** about sandbaggers don't know how to bracket race. Once you know the "rules" it's a fun game. Once you know what's going on it opens a vast complex door on how (again skill) required to win.
Dont know how to race because I mentioned sand baggers? Uh huh....Come on down to San Antonio and show me your skill sets. I think you might go home mad, sell your car, and buy a mustang when I get done with you :grin2:
I will bite my lip on what happens on those events. I much prefer dial in bracket racing in which everyone has more of a fair shot of winning. Kinda sucks tho when you have a slower car next to you dialed in at a 15. You watch him go for 3 seconds while you sit there before your tree lights up.
Congrats on getting into the semi finals. That's a real good showing. Taking a 12.50 car and slowing down to make a 13.0 bracket cut isn't exactly easy to do but possible. Taking a 12.50 car and wishing it to run 12.0 just isn't going to happen. The reason to hold numbers (sandbag lol) is that you can always slow the car to run dead on the dial.
The few things I mentioned shouldnt deter you from drag racing as there will always be someone faster than you out there. I go quite often with several friends to hang out, talk a little friendly smack, and race anyone just to see what we can do. Test and tune is what they call that.
I dont enter many bracket races and I never race for money out there as you will get hustled by the few who have to prove something. Just pay attention to the races and you will figure it out.
If any of you havent gone racing before and have a track close by give it a try and you will have a blast!
You will also be humbled out there real quick seeing some fast ass cars out there.
