Not true! I was under the impression that CA cars didn't get the rear valence or the tips, but they will if the car is ordered with it...

As for the Petty Blue, in '70 and '71 that color was a 999 Special Order code. The only Challengers I know of that got the 999 code were 3 R/T SEs for Dick Landy (?) in '70. They came with the (EA9 of the top of my head??) Charcoal Iridescent...An Imp color...

Re: Question about R/T Challenger (1972)

Hey guys, you speak of a "white book" and a "red book". Where car I find these? I also have a 72 that has been repainted but nothing else (apparently). Unfortunately when it was repainted the fender tag was misplaced so discovering original color is nigh impossible. All I have read does not list Plum Crazy as a color in 72, yet every ding, scratch, chip or dent is purple then primer then metal. There is no trace of any previous color anywhere, behind interior trim, also purple. I know it is possible that someone did strip the car before painting, and a 12 year old paint job looking this good implies that it was a truly good job, but is it possible that it was special ordered as Plum Crazy? Does iether one of your books list ANY cars as Plum Crazy in 72?

Re: Question about R/T Challenger (1972)

Just an FYI:

I bought some slotted and cross drilled rotors from YearOne for my '72. Figured they would work on my car (they were listed as 73-74 I believe). Anyways, they don't QUITE work. The new rotor sits about 1/8" off the dust guard more than the stock. The stock rotors were 202.00 each, so I tried to get these others as a replacement. The calipers will not quite fit on the 73-74s

I could machine down a bracket that the caliper mounts on, that 1/8" to make it work but I don't want to try that. So I am just putting it back together stock.

Anyone need a brand new set of cross drilled / slotted rotors for 73 and newer challenger PM me. Otherwise I'll end up throwing these things out

Re: Question about R/T Challenger (1972)

Another thing worty of mentioning is the fact that your car is a VERY EARLY build machine. I was glossing over the previous threads, and you also mentioned that the car has an extra leaf spring on the passenger's side. Someone mentioned that was to dispel any wheel hop the car had, which is true. What someone didn't mention is that extra leaf spring was part of the Heavy Duty Suspension package for the hemi and six pack cars. This is extremely plausible for this car to have the bigger spring pack from Day One, because this car was built so early. Chrysler (and all the key players in the automotive industry) were notorious for using last year's left over parts until that supply was drained. As far as FC7 Plum Crazy being on your car, take a turn signal off the fender and see if there is any underlying purple. FC7 disappeared off the order books in 1972, but discount that! I remember seeing a '74 'Cuda on carsinbarns.com (i think) that was special-ordered WITH IN-VIOLET paint! Someone had to pull some strings REALLY HARD to get that paint scheme. Now, I am pulling for your car NOT being a factory FC7 car, just for the same fact that your tag doesn't have a 999 paint code, and instead has the TB3(?) blue instead. Somebody resprayed your car. The obvious places to look are behind the door panels, and underneath the window rubber seals. If you want to be more advantageous, see if you can find traces of the grape under the dash areas, or underneath the carpet!
Good Luck!
KFD

Re: Question about R/T Challenger (1972)

J54 is actually the code for the ralley hood <--- on some car lines it meant the addition of underhood insulation perhaps; however, specific to atleast 72-74 challengers, this denoted the dual scooped hood....... my 74 also has this code and lacks the "A57" code....

as well, my car is also coded for the V7W sripes... which are......... to the best of my knowledge based on my research speaking with the nephew of the original owner of mine who remembered the car new, and removal of the mirrors exposing the original paint below (car was repainted once and had a fender replaced in approx 1978)....... any way, there is painted pinstriping pretty much running along the upper section of the car at mirror height, the original owners nephew recalls this pinstriping on the car as new; thus, I've determined that V7W is infact white pinstripes 2 white pinstripes very close together with 1 line being about double the thickness of the other running mirror perch height along the side of the car

p.s. if the car were infact special ordered with the purple, it would be coded for purple and not still retain the b3 designation on the fener tag, there would be a special order paint code, no idea what that code would be exactly; however, it would be there and would not retain the other code on the tag

Re: Question about R/T Challenger (1972)

If the car is special ordered with a color outside the option list (like Plum Crazy in 72) it would have paint code 999 on the fender tag.

Re: Question about R/T Challenger (1972)

J54 is for the hood pins unless they changed it for '72.

Re: Question about R/T Challenger (1972)

Hey gang...This is a way OLD thread, but I just got a notice about it in my Email box...I REALLY glossed over it, in that I didn't catch that your car was the TB3 Blue. Another thing you mentioned on your fender tag, was N41, Dual Exhaust without tips. Is it possible that the tag said M41, which was the rubber side moulding, much like the one in the picture of the Petty Blue Challenger that Everett posted?
