Whats the max. distance key fob needs to be from car for it to start?

The reason I'm asking this is , I wouldn't want to be in a cafe with the car a few feet away from me on the outside and all of a sudden hear the roar of the engine and watch it peel away! Just like in the episode of Top Gear!

I've got a GWE on order, just want to hear from you guys that already have your challengers if you've ever tested out the maximum distance the key fob needs to be from car for it to start with the start button. Will it only start with key fob ever so close and personal with the car, or will we see our cars probably being driven off by crooks with the knowledge of "Hey I Don't Need Keys" ?

Few things here.

The advertised range is 100ft.

You must push the button twice within a couple of seconds for it to start, so pocket starting is unlikely.

The car won't remote start if the doors are unlocked.

After remote starting, the car will not go into gear until you get in it with the fob and push the button.

Hope that helps.

I read it somewhere in the literature to my new 392 that to unlock the door with the key in your pocket, it was 5.1 feet. I guess it would be the same to start it. I always lock mine anyway.

My bad. I thought you were concerned about Remote Start.

A friend tried starting my car with the fob in my pocket just outside the door and it wouldn't. You need to be darned close.

How about with the manual transmission, where there is no automatic remote start, but you have the option of starting the car with the start button on the dash as long as the key fob is on you. Will the car only start in this case if the key fob is in the imediate vicinity of the car(on you), or will it also start lets say if the key fob is left on the kitchen counter and you go to the car outside on the driveway and push the start button on the dash with the distance between the fob and car being lets say 20 feet or so ?

Thanks

It has to be virtually in the car.

People have been getting ''Key Fob Not Detected'' when they're in the car and it's in their pocket. I have twice yesterday.

x2. I can have my fob on the shelf in front of my car, 3 feet from the hood, and the car will not start.

Interesting topic. So, to find out my car's starting distance limitations, I did an experiment.

The car wouldn't start with the key fob...
  • 3 feet away on the ground just outside the driver's door.
  • 1 foot away on the ground just outside the driver's door.
  • Taped to the driver's door just by the door handle.
  • Taped to the driver-side rear view mirror.
  • Taped on the roof just in front of the sun roof.
  • Taped on the roof just behind the sun roof.
  • Taped on the rear window glass.
  • Taped on the rear trunk.
  • Sitting on the rear seat window shelf.
The car would start with the key fob...
  • Sitting anywhere within the front seat area.
  • Sitting on the rear seats.
  • Taped to the front windows.
  • Sitting on the sun roof glass.
  • Sitting on the front hood just before the cowl area.
What I also found interesting though was that the car doors would not lock with the keys anywhere inside the car where the key fob can be detected. Each time I tried to lock the car (with key fob, inside door lock button, exterior door lock button, pushing down the door lock) the car would beep/flash the lights three to four times and the door lock would come back up. Kewl!!
