My engine is misfiring. The first time it happened, I was at a stop sign for ~ 3-4 seconds. The bell went off once and the engine icon come on and stayed on. The engine seemed fine when I drove it home. The next day I called the dealer and was told to bring it in. When I did, they hooked it up to the diagnostic computer thingee and it said cylinder #7 had experienced 1 misfire but seemed ok. They reset it and said I should drive it gently for a while and see what happens. So I left and one day later it did it again except this time the bell kept ringing and the engine icon kept flashing. There was a distinct roughness to the engine and a very noticable loss of power. I slowed down and pulled over. The engine was running quite rough, the bell was still sounding and the engine icon was still flashing. Then without doing anything, the bell stopped and the engine icon stopped flashing but stayed illuminated. I took it back to the dealer but since it was now running fine they seemed at a loss for what to do. I saw them "huddling" and it was decided that they would remove the spark plugs from #7. When they did they said the plugs were fouled. I said "yeah what did you expect, the cylinder misfired for 30-45 seconds and that would foul any plug." The service manager gave me some kind of story like "well people are always starting these cars to see what it sounds like (during the delivery process) and that could cause a plug to foul. They cleaned off the plugs on #7 and asked me to bring it back tomorrow so that they could change out #7 with new plugs. I thought it odd that they did not have any plugs in stock but ok, I brought it back again. They changed out both plugs and I drove it for a day without any problems. Today, it happened again. The bell sounded, the light came on, and the engine started runninig rough again. Now here is where it gets interesting. The engine is still running rough, but the bell stops ringing and the engine light stops flashing and now is not even illuminated. Now I was under the impression that in order to get the engine light to go out, one would have to clear the trouble code. I shut off the engine, waited 5 minutes, and started it again. It is now back to running on all eight and smooth as silk with no engine light. Anyone got any ideas? I thought it might have been a coil problem but since each coil also fires the secondary plug of another cylinder, I would have thought that the computer would have recorded two cylinders misfiring. Maybe I got a bum computer chip since the car cannot seen to remember it had misfiring (no engine light on).
I'll call the dealer again on Monday but I'm not confident that they know what is wrong. Any and all ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all for the help. I'm running 93 octane but it contains 10% ethanol. I'll try to find some without it but it seems every place I go has it noted on the pump. Does anyone know any brands that don't use ethanol?
wow, thats a real bummer. Hopefully its an easy fix. Maybe someone can chime with a few ideas as what to look for. I on the other hand have never heard of this problem before. Im thinking along the same lines as you. Either a bad coil, or a short in the wires going to the coil. I cant believe the PCM didnt record it, that may be part of your problem. Who knows at this point. Sorry

There is a problem with the ECM The main computor, there is a thread from yesterday regarding this very problem. Also the dealer stated that the factory engineers are warning about the Ethanol content in the 91 oct. gas . DOnt use the Bio fuel folks. its not good for the our cars. Those of you out in gods land stay away from it.
My dad's friend is a mechanic for nearly 15 years and he told me once that most hemi's have problems with the number 7 cylinder mis-firing. I always thought he was full of it but now this? Really interesting. Sorry about your car and I would love to know the resolution once they fix it for you.
As stated above there is a thread from a few days ago, saying the # 7 cylinder mis-fired.And there is quite a few post's on it. Check it out, good luck!

X2^^^^^ what Mark said and if i recall it was due to ethanol blended gas.
