This was a 2012 challenger with a 6 speed. It made right in line with what the 6 speed cars make on our dyno as a baseline. I think I could get a touch more out of it, but humidity is obscene today. I just thought I'd share since there's been a bit of debate as to the worthiness of a 6.4
Very impressive, glad to see this combo working, some of the initial results I've seen from others had me wondering if it was a worth while mod. 60 ponies is certainly worth doing.
Sorry Man, I can't give away all the secrets. I will say there are several things that have to be changed. It's no more expensive that a typical cam swap with new springs.
You said can't give away the secrets but I may need you too.
I'm about to have my car in the shop and would like to throw a cam in there while they are doing the 36k maintenance and putting in my JBA shorties. They are admittedly not a MOPAR shop but are the only one near me and I've trusted them with general work so far.
They are a reputable shop for Ford and Chevy but just simply haven't had much MOPAR come through. Before I showed up with my Challenger he had only a 2010 Charger on the rollers and tuned. So I'm literally number two for him on the tuning aspect.
Therefore, if there is any help you could give this shop from a experienced MOPAR shop as yourselves, my car and my wallet will surely appreciate it.
I don't understand, why do you think he owes you this info? It's not like when he signed up he agreed to fix your car for free.
How do you expect him to do this even if he agrees? It's not as simple as writing up a nice little concise post about it so you can print it out for your mechanic.
I don't think it's juvenile of him to ask if you're serious, I think your expectations are a bit high.
I just wonder why a mechanic in Texas would be required to give out information on a cam swap to a guy in Georgia on demand with no previous relationship happening?
I am certain that there are shops near you that have done this sort of thing before. You ought to be able to find one pretty easily if you look.
I am unable to give him or any of the other excellent shops my business because I can not ship my car out as it is a daily driver. I would love to use a modern hemi experienced dealer but living where I live there isn't one. Hell there's only two speed shops in town and only one has a dyno.
I thought we were here to help each other and if someone has info that would assist another member in his install, with no direct competition to themselves, I didn't think it would be be that big of a deal.
Whenever I have done something before and someone is about to do the same thing I just give them a friendly heads up about any possible gotchas that can come up along the way. Like when we change our spark plugs use multiple short extension instead of one long one because stuff gets in the way when you try to pull your plugs out.
Simply stuff like that. And it was a request not a demand. Damn y'all are jumpy. I thought we were a community to share knowledge and be helpful.
If there really are no gotcha's that he encountered during the install and it's a straight up cam swap then he could just say the magic is in the tuning the install is nothing out of the ordinary. Instead he shot off at the mouth.
He didn't shoot off at the mouth, though.
I bet there are several shops within an hour and a half or 2 hour drive of you that could do this with their eyes closed.
I'm really not trying to be a jerk here, but your post said I was going to have to share my info......that really no one's decision to make but mine. I certainly don't mind helping people. I help people all the time. I just get a little put off when someone tells me I have to do something.
As far as the parts....Arrington sells a kit. Call and ask for Don, he will get you everything you need to the tune of about $800 in parts. Most places charge $500 for the cam, $300 to swap springs, and on cam swaps I usually charge $450 to tune VVT stuff. If you can get on a dyno there I can tune it via email. It's an easy enough tune after you have done a few.
To clarify I did not demand. I said I MAY need you to. Thank you for clarifying where you were put off at as I was truly confused at what I did to receive such a response.
I will be in touch with Arrington to get the particulars about the cam package.
Sweet bro, I know who I trust to do this on mine someday as that's gonna be my mod before I go SC. You make it kinda an advantage to live in Dallas nowadays, as I get to see and hear the cars and the owners, and you when you aren't at work, LOL! If you ever move back to Houston we will kidnaps ya back to DFW, just sayin....
Anybody remember when I suggested that 450 hp was "plausible" within the displacement of 5.7 L, by applying 6.4 techniques (goodies) to it? A select few said it was "impossible" and pure wishful thinking. It was heresy given that it gets so close to the SRT8 rating, even though there was no intent whatsoever to show-up the 6.4. That's just where I projected the 5.7 L would end up when applying a similar powerband shape to it.
I'm glad vendors out there are exploring the envelope for the 5.7!
Looks like when the 6.4 cam (plus associated tuning and whatever else is in the recipe) moves to a 5.7 engine, torque pk shifts upward from 4200 rpm to 4800 rpm, and then breathes a whole lot easier on the top end, as well. That yields a nice increase in pk hp. The stronger output doesn't come on strong until beyond 4200 rpm, so that is where you got to drive it to enjoy this upgrade (nothing wrong with that...just making an observation).
Hey Briansnl, I am located in central Texas and would like to do a 392 cam swap with you. I am willing to buy all the parts and drive out to your shop where ever it is located for the labor portion. I've been hearing some really good gains out of the 5.7 liter with this swap and I really want to do it right the first time.
