Hello fellow forumers, it's nice to meet you all and I hope everyone having great time with their beloved Challengers.
I just got mine last week (a 2016 RT with 8AT in GoMango color). I like everything about the car except the exhaust sound.
It feels kind of wimpy to me for a 5.7L 8 cylinder engine...I test drove a 6MT first and it had a very impressive low throaty growl which I absolutely loved but my wife can't drive the stick so she insisted on getting automatic. So if I may ask - what sort of upgrades should I consider without breaking the bank to improve the sound? would installing a cold air intake kit be a factor vs. a custom catback system (or something else)? Thanks!
Hi DF Triple Nines. I have a 2015 R/T. I felt the same way as you do. My son has a 1989 Pontiac Formula that he garages with us (all stock) and I kind of expected the R/T to sound something like that. I added the Mopar CAI (77070044AC) first. It was a noticable difference in terms of the tone being deeper and a little more throaty. A worthy investment IMO. After a few weeks and numerous Youtube videos, I decided to kick in for the Mopar Performance CatBack exhaust. This was back in June and I still enjoy driving without the radio on. It is such a sweet sound and IMO makes the car that much more fun to drive. Not sure why this is not a factory option to begin with. Enjoy!
Also planning on getting K&n intake sometime soon which will make it sound a little deeper but might not do anything performance wise until you get a custom tune.
Also you can get muffler or resonators deleted which will cost a lot cheaper compared to getting a full custom exhaust.

Have the mufflers(under the middle of the car) removed and replaced with straight pipe.Try this first.Sounds good, not obnoxiously loud and cost me 60 dollars.
Yep I agree, but it is your preference if you want loud or something more subdued especially on the interior. I tried axleback, rear resonator delete. Best for my ears and cruising was the mid muffler delete. More sound than stock and still quiet cruising but opens up when romping on it.
Depends on the sound you are looking for. One of the main things that the R/T needs is a better than stock sound. Personally I love the ZOOMERs sound because it has that true old school low grumble. Videos do not do the system justice, until you hear it in person!
Here is a 2015 with Zoomers that was used as the tester car.
This video makes it sound a little higher than it does in person, but does give you an idea.
My wife has a truck with a 5.7 in it. She has a Airaid CAI and 27" glass packs and they sound pretty awesome to me. Mellow at idle but you hear them growl when you step on it. They are louder than the Borlas on my 6.4 but not obnoxious. It cost about $100 for the glass packs and I think $125 for the muffler shop to take off the stock trash can muffler and add the glass packs. Yours may cost less to install because the truck isn't true dual exhaust (It's like 2 into 1 into 2) and your Challenger is true duals so they don't need to really re-route and add extra pipe to make it dual.
But... I like the old school muscle/glass pack sound.
If you like the old school muscle car sound, do a resonator delete, replace the stock mufflers with glass packs and do the CAI.
If you want it more mellow and less drone, do the same but leave the resonators and maybe use the 35" glass packs.
I just got a 2016 R/T Shaker this year and knew I wanted the exhaust upgraded for a better sound.
After mucho research and video watching, I went with the Corsa Extreme cat back. Fits and sounds great.
It's really a personal preference deal. There are plenty of systems out there that work well.
My stock system did get slightly deeper after about 1000 miles on it. So, if what you hear now is close to what you like you may want to wait to see what happens. It still wasn't enough for me though. I'm glad I went aftermarket.
Look into doing a Resonator Delete. That's what my cars previous owner did, and it sound incredible. Nice low growl in idle, and when you get on it it is a wet dream. Very inexpensive way to get a great sound.
That is unless you are wanting to spend some good money on a good exhaust!
At first on my 2015 RT Shaker A8 I did the resonator delete, the sound was good, added more low tone and aggressive sound at shifting at WOT but sometime there was something weird about how it sounded, like too harsh (not sure about the term english is not my main language).
But after a couple of month I decided to remove the muffler and make it straight pipe ... the sound is INCREDIBLE !! You start the car it's like a monster and oh my god the sound at WOT is so aggressive the tone is very deep and the cost to do this is very low!
I see this is an old thread lol so I'm assuming the author of the OP has already done something to his exhaust, but I straight piped my 5.7 and replaced the factory H pipe with the X Pipe. Also mine is a 6M and apparently the 6ms run true duals all the way from the engine. I left my cats though, didn't want to mess with the warranty and be too obnoxious lol but the sound is incredible
A few weeks ago I posted a similar inquiry. Lots of good replies/suggestions. Finally got around to making changes. I was looking more a more deep-throated sound, but without a lot of drone. Obviously, we all have our own ideas, but here's what I did.
Being conservative Awe first replaced the stock mufflers with 18" Magna Flows. Minor difference, but only apparent on acceleration. After discussing options at the muffler shop, I took their advice. We kept the Magna Flows, but removed the resonators. This did the trick. Got a deeper/nastier tone, minor drone, but only on harder acceleration and not at all offensive at cruising speed.
