Well I've gone ahead and purchased a Comp Cam through HHP. Details below. I will also be porting the heads since they will be coming off during the install as well. In regards to tuners, any suggestions? Looking online i've seen alot of people recommend Johan@Diablosport or Mike@OST. Anyone ever go through HHP for tuning? Didn't want to purchase email tuning until i get all the parts i need.
Camshaft: Comp 274 Add Spring/Retainer Kit: Yes (Required) Add Non-MDS Lifters: No (Manual Trans) Add Head Bolts & Gaskets: No Thanks Add Email Tuning: No
Now, I am having a hard time believing this is all i need to get the install right. Does anyone know of any additions to look into for the install? Hardened Push Rods, Double Roller Timing Chain, Larger Fuel Injectors, Fuel Rails, etc.?
Ultimately, I also wanted to get a 90MM TB and have it ported to match a 6.1 intake manifold. Then have everything installed at once. However, I spoke with a performance shop and was advised that there is no need to look into the 6.1 intake manifold to replace the stock 5.7; as the stock 5.7 intake manifold performs just as well for the 5.7 345 engine. Does this sound or seem to be correct?
Looking at Arrington's throttle bodies, it does not look like a 90MM TB is offered for the '14 challenger R/T. Now, I am thinking of contacting the shop below to request that they port the 5.7 intake manifold to fit a 88mm TB which is offered for the 14's through Arrington.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the time and help fella's.
Current Mods:
K&N CAI
Original 40 series Flowmaster (resonator delete)
JBA Longtube headers (catless)
JBA Mid-Pipes 3-2.5 inch
Diablo 91 octane tune w/ minor adjustments
Billet Catch Can
I wouldn't think that would be a good choice for an auto as the tq should shift very high with ported heads.
I guess a manual can get away with it if you keep it wound up enough.
I want to go the other way on my 5.7 in the jeep. I want low end grunt where I do 90% of my driving.
@JDGA80 - When I spoke with Arrington and HHP, everything was confirmed good to go with the stock engine parts. The only advice was from Arrington and that was to upgrade the pushrods, which I then ordered as "cheap" insurance. Now, Arrington and HHP didn't say anything about this, but on other forumns i heard something about may having to delete the VVT for it to run properly but that one is a toss up in the air to me.
@KJ392 - I know of a guy that knows another guy, who knows another guy that can get the sticker going for a side $40.00. Small price to pay a year for going catless....The set up and how it runs will ultimately end up in the hands of whoever i go with to get the computer tuned.
***Hoping not to run into any problems when gettin the custom tune to try and download. Heard with the DCX-1000 tuner i have runs into complications with freezing or timing out. May sell the DCX-1000 and buy a trinity if it saves a headache but may take my chances.
Damn, I need a guy. Oh wait, that didn't sound right... It gets old taking the mids off and on for inspections.
Keep us posted. I wonder if it would be too much cam for a jeep GC auto...
I have the 274 in my 392 and love it! A bit rough but that's what I wanted. Also catless...and know a guy that has a guy.
On a 5.7L headers heads and a 274 cam should yield a NICE gain! I had mine tuned remotely by Josh at HHP and happy with the turnout...
So the motor is good to spin to 8k now? What's the peak HP@rpm on that cam? Ya'll have any sound clips to view? This sounds like a cheap way to make SC hp. Lol
To be honest with you, i think those are just the specs that they got from Comp Cam. So bascially i would say its a UP TO ESTIMATE RANGE of RPM that the cam will be pulling through. Im sure a pull through 6200-6300 will be fine.
Got the cam and phase limiter in today, waiting on the spring/retainer kit then will be pulling out the motor. Should be about a 2 month build. Just in time for the Texas cold weather.
No such thing as cheap HP
Springs, Pushrods, mds delete is a couple hundred. Cam phaser may be needed.
No such animal as a double roller TC for our hemi. You can do a Jessle timing belt thats bad ass for 2800.00 if ya like,
It will never spin 8000rpm pcm will let it go max to 6600. Your bottom end wont go 8000 either. Well It may just not for long.
Normally when one opens a valve more and longer, takes more fuel to make more steam. Injectors and fuel pumps you may put on you list.
So a wideband air fuel gauge is needed, unless you just want to Guess. Or a tuner can guess for you without A/F gauge for email tune. They tune so many over the years they can get it at a Fat close i guess.
Auto or stick, if you an auto, Id be looking for a converter to get it moving.
FlatTop
Idk maybe it's the former chevy guy in me but how come you can spin a 5.7 ls1 to 6700 Rpms all day long safely with just chromoly pushrods but people are scared to take 5.7 hemi's past 6200? Is there a reason for this? Engine geometery maybe? Neither motor has forged internals at all. Idk I just feel like with how well the factory heads flow on these cars we leave a lot up top with bigger cams and higher flowing heads. Any thoughts?
Oh and op please keep me posted as I have a 14 rt 6speed as well and would love to see what your car puts down. I'd like to do a similar setup. Mike at ost has tuned a lot of 274's I'd let him dial it in. Got big or go home it's time for these 5.7's to start making real power
Just took off the intake manifold to send off for porting at peak speed shop. 88mm to match the arrington 88mm throttle body. Gonna start on porting the heads and installing the cam by next week, hope to have everything done within two months. I will be posting results from the same dyno place that i used to post results for the DCX intune. Hoping to get at least 50-60 more at the wheels putting me over 400+for HP and Torque. I've had more recommendations to go with Josh from HHP or Mike from OST for the tune compared to others. So i guess the pricing will be the main play on who i go with, ill call later though on that, gotta work some OT *stuffs gettin expensive* lol.
Downside is that I'm hearing with the DCX handheld tuner that it freezes or stalls during the download of the email tune into the programmer or into the car. So I may save myself the headache and sell the DCX and get the trinity.
I have talked with certain shops that say there is no need for aftermarket parts for all the upgrades im doing to run right, but still want to look into fuel rails and injectors as I dont see anything wrong with upgrading for stronger potential so to say. I'm a little iffy on the injectors as I've read that the stock ones are great for the set up and I don't want to over flood/"overkill" with fuel being dumped. If anyone has anymore input in regards to the fuel rails or fuel injectors im all ears. Thanks again.
Do the injectors later if need be based on A/F logs after she is running. Too big and you can wash out cylinders at idle. That can be a slow death to a motor. At RPM, the injectors can lean out enough but idle, they may not be able to run a short enough pulse width (duty cycle).
I've done a couple of email tunes for my bolt ons on my intune and never had an issue. Sounds like a software glitch. As for injectors that's something your going to want to talk to your tuner about. They will be able to recommend what fueling setup will work best
Got the intake manifold back from being ported at peak speed shop to match the 88mm throttle body. Big difference in throttle body size. *did not tune*
Car went into the shop yesterday to have cam installed and pushrods. Should have it back by Wednesday or Thursday. Tuned and all.
After reading about cam changes for the past couple of years, I never hear anything about installing new lifters with the cam change. I have always installed new lifters on a new cam when assembling an engine to prevent the lobes from being wiped out.
Or with the new roller lifters you can run used lifters on a new cam. Thanks
Oh hey! What up man. Yeah I remember ya, that SRTMax Plus Cam sounded real good in your vehicle. Although I advanced, I had to leave the track early due to a family matter.
Car front face is off and cam is being installed, should be installed and ready to tune by tomorrow. However, Josh from HHP was not available for the custom tune until this upcoming Wednesday. Real Anxious.
I am loving the hell outta this thing right now!! Biggest smile on my face. I know it was asked previously, thought I would include that the rev limiter has safely been increased to 6700rpm on the 5.7 tune.
