Got mine back this evening. Last pull on the "safe" tune at smoothing 5 was 481HP and 447TQ. This in 100% humidity and about 84 degrees. I like the way it drives but it poured rain just before I left the shop, so couldn't get too crazy on the way home. The tuner was still trying to get the throttle application smoother as he wasn't happy with it. I drove it and didn't feel that it was any worse than stock. Actually a bit the opposite. I think it's smoother and he's not happy with it. Turns out the Chevys, Fords and SRT8's he's tuned can be made very smooth on the throttle. I've never had a really smooth transition off idle since I got this car, so it feels better to me with all the work he did.
Power seems pretty seamless. It's definitely noticeable, but smooth. Got a bit of what felt like misfire the first time I jumped on it intermittently up to 60, then realized it's the stupid traction control doing what it's done the whole time I've had the car, but the car didn't break the tires loose at 60 before! I turned the ESP off and it went away. That's always been one of my pet peeves about this car. I don't like the traction control killing cylinders when the tires break loose.
Overall, I'm pretty impressed with it so far. I'm going to be checking it out over the next few days and then take a long road trip with it. I think the tuner that I had working on this did a fantastic job tuning around the '09 issues. He says this is the hardest ECM he's had to play with. He suggested that when the CMR software is a bit better at controlling the '09 that I get to a dyno nearby and log some runs. Then he'll modify it by email.
The leanest it gets is 11.6 and it's around 10.8-11.2 for nearly the whole run. He leaned it a bit, but it wants to jump to 12.4 between 5K and 6K or so with just a small change to WOT. This resulted in 500HP and another 20TQ, but he didn't think it was a safe thing to do. The ignition total advance at WOT and upper RPM is only 12 degrees. It may be the pump gas down here. The car has Shell 93 in it, but could be a station thing. I'll try a different station next time. It still makes 480HP at the wheels with the conservative tune and drives smoothly, so I think I'll live with it! I'm making just about 150HP more than stock and about 100TQ.
Will post again before I leave on my trip home and then again after the trip. Looking forward to getting back home where it's less humid but I'm going to miss some of the friends I've made down here in Houston.
Great to hear Bearair!!! Awesome numbers you got!! Enjoy that awesome ride! Will be a beast when you want it, and a normal everyday driver when you want that! Thats whats great about the Vortech Cars IMO!
10.8 - 11.2 seems pretty rich to me. Being too rich is not really a good thing as it can burn up cats and what not.
When I tuned my 4Runner I went for 11.5 - 11.8 AFR. From what you're saying though....a very small tweak in the WOT AFR resulted in a 12.X AFR between 5K - 6K?
Given the above, I'd take the over rich condition, but keep an eye on those cats.
