Re: Whipple Superchargers now Shipping!

I've got a TRD Supercharger on my 2002 Toyota 4Runner. Best money I ever spent on that car. It's just a measely V6, but I gained 100 RWHP with the TRD blower, and it's not even intercooled. I get 9psi with an upgraded pulley, added a 7th injector that puts fuel through the intake, and custome tuned it myself (PITA) with a piggy back system and my laptop. It's been perfectly streetable and reliable for nearly 2 years.

Now, I'm new to Dodge vehicles, and V8s period. How do the 5.7L Hemi engines handle Superchargers? Any history of blowing up, burning pistons, valves etc?

I'm hoping tuning is easier than it was on my 4Runner. Soldering a piggyback ECU into the stock ECM was a real PITA and having to tune each fuel and timing cell manually was a real drag. It took me about 2 weeks to get the tune down. So my last question...how are these cars tuned?

$7K seems like ALOT of money for a Supercharger, but I love the whine and would love to drop one on the Challenger if I end up getting one. It's between the Challenger and a 2010 Camaro.

For anyone who'd like to see what I did on the 4Runner, click the banner in my sig. Some pretty good video on my site.
You said yourself that your TRD kit wasnt complete. Ours comes with the Predator, intercooler, heat exchanger, 8 larger injectors, Fuel pump upgrade, billet fuel-rails, and a map sensor. All of those components alone in addition to the kit are easily $1500-$2000 worth of components. No piggy-back or aux injector in this kit. The 5.7/6.1 hemi will easily take 5-7psi with the right tune which we are spending lots of time on.

Thanks. Any long term test mules (any 5.7L will do) as reference to show 5-6psi on this motor is A OK?

We have a combined 30,000 miles on 2 different SRT's right now which have higher compression than the 5.7. No long term results on 5.7's yet.

Good to know. I would assume those are pretty hard miles as well since you're testing and what not, not to mention enjoying the system.

The 4Runner has been fun, but nothing like a SC'd V8.

On a related note, I believe I bought the Challenger tonight. Went to take a look at the car that came into the dealer, loved it but tried to act like I didn't Unless something goes really haywire tomorrow during delivery that is, but things seemed straight forward.

Got a fully loaded R/T for $33,367.00 with every option but MyGig and the Sunroof. Included R/T Hood to Fender stripes, color Hemi Orange and the 0% for 48 mos as well. These things are a steal right now.

A couple more questions if I may. What type of HP will the current units support? Will the intercooler be able to suffiently cool the added flow from more boost-say 12-14psi? Has the pulley/belt system been tested for reliability and belt slippage at said boost?
This would also be a huge factor for me in justifying the cost. Some of the other blower packages have shown to have insufficient cooling with added boost. I've also heard of belt slippage issues. I think many guys who will eventually go with a built motor don't want to know find out that they will also have to upgrade the head unit or belt system or fab up a different intercooler and piping to make the kind of boost they would like. That all adds up in extra cost. I would love to find a turnkey system that would handle 12-15lbs of boost on, say a 392, and have everything work properly wihtout additional upgrades on the blower other than fuel system.

Not sure on a 392, but we have 10psi on a 426 with no problems making 630rwhp. On a 392, we could see 12psi pretty easily with no changes aside from the discplacement change. If you want more than 625-650rwhp you will need to upgrade to the 2.9L which will be available later.

This sounds like such a lame question, but it does make a difference to me.

I'll be using my Challenger as a daily driver, and if there's a constant whine in the cabin during normal (1400-2600 rpm) driving it may drive me insane. Should I just forget about twin screw SCs like the Whipple and the Techco/SMS?

The Whipple supercharger is whisper quiet at idle and part-throttle driving conditions, I can not comment on the SMS/techco.
