car dies and wont start

car dies and when i try to start it sounds like bottom end is turning over but no fire or compression it gave me a p0014 code took it to dealers they told me it was the starter and of course it not covered and they want 550.00 to put the starter on if it is the starter why did it die

A code P0014 refers to the VVT (variable valve timing) or VCT (variable camshaft timing) components and the car's PCM (powertrain control module, also called an ECM). That consists of a few different components but the P0014 DTC specifically refers to the camshaft (cam) timing. In this case, if the cam timing is above a set limit (over-advanced), the engine light will be illluminated and the code will be set. Bank 1 is the side of the engine containing cylinder #1. What year and mileage is your car? I just hope it's not a 5.7 with about 40,000 miles on it.

If it were the starter the spindle would just spin at high speed if the gear was not engaging. If the starter gear is engaging the flywheel then the engine turns over. I guess you need to describe what it does a little better.

I was getting of the hwy and it just died no noise no warning I tried to start it it sounds like to me that the starter is fine and the bottom side (camshaft) is turning but it's not firing or any compression he dealer told me that there was a hole that you can look and see if your timing chain broke ? I have never heard of such a thing I would have to call bs on that its a 2009 5.7 L 87,000 .....

Desert Bum tore down a 5.7 and never mentioned a site glass to look at the chain. If there were one he would have said so. It'll be interesting to see what the dealer does to fix your car. Good Luck!!
