Lighter Wheels

Does anyone plan on going to a lighter wheel? Not necessarily smaller in diameter, Im talking a lighter alloy. I remember reading an article about carbon fiber/magnesium rims that reduced the over all weight of the wheels by almost 80lbs. That would be a great mod, but they were very expensive wheels. I think i remember them being about $2500.00 each.

Is there another alloy that is not quite as expensive, but will net some weight loss?

If you are ordering an SRT, it comes with lighter weight forged Alcoa aluminum wheels. They weigh 6 lbs. less than the cast wheels. Supposedly, they cost $600 each.

Re: Lighter Wheels

yea i remembered reading that they were a bit lighter. Any idea as to how much they weigh? I never thought to ask the SRT guys that question.

Re: Lighter Wheels

If I were racing I would get a set of the smallest centerline or weld wheels I could find..

For the daily duty those alcoas will do me just fine.

If I were to say get an R/T, with the money I saved I could see buying some lighter 18s, but not with the cash I threw at the SRT..

you are right though, reducing your unsprung weight is a very good mod.

Re: Lighter Wheels

I was just looking at some different alternatives to losing some of that unsprung weight. I think it would help such a heavy car, in mileage and performance.

Re: Lighter Wheels

Lol if you can tell the difference in handling between a car with regular wheels and chrome wheels you are superhuman. In fact even with an 80 pound difference you are barely going to notice it unless you are stripping your car down to nothing. . . which in that case you might as well buy the drag package.

80 pounds is like. . . half a passenger.

It's not just the gross weight- but unsprung (wheel) weight. It makes a difference in high speed handling.

Re: Lighter Wheels

20 pounds per corner of unsprung weight is massive.

Chroming wheels will make them a little heavier but in reality - decide what you want to do with your car, drive it or race it.

Re: Lighter Wheels

I'm sure it'll make a difference, I just meant that if you're going as far as spending that much money on lighter wheels you are probably someone who's going to go all the way with lightening your car; carbon fiber hood, losing the back seat, etc.

As far as the difference between chrome wheels and regular wheels, same deal, if the weight is that big of an issue most of your mods are going to be performance based not visual.

So I say go for the chrome wheels if you want em! Of course everyone has different priorities so if you've got the cash to spend $$$$ on lighter wheels to balance out the 100 lb audio system you're putting in that's your prerogative.
