2008 Dodge Challenger Spy Shots

"A Hemi V8 was no challenge for our photographer, as he was still able to snag a great shot of the upcoming Dodge Challenger on a fast-moving highway. And even though the pre-production Challenger was wearing a bit of vinyl - one can easily tell that the production model is nearly identical to the concept shown on the auto show circuit. Dodge's all-new muscle car will be built on the new "LY" RWD platform in Ontario, Canada. Production will start in the spring of 2008 - and the Challenger will go on sale shortly afterwards as a 2008 model. Pricing is expected to start around $31,000, although it's rumored that the R/T models have all been pre-sold in the 50K range. A convertible is also expected to arrive in the not-so-distant future.
The official debut of the (production) Challenger will be on February 6th at the Chicago Auto Show - just 222 days away."

Oh, we can already taste the adrenalin from the mere thought of the new era of muscle car wars! High-resolution picture available via the link below. – Ray Wert @ http://www.jalopnik.com

The exhaust tips aren't like the concepts, not as wide and recessed into the body.

Re: 2008 Dodge Challenger Spy Shots

I wonder about the taillights. I really liked the concept. Makes the car very unique. From the picture, it looks like they went with the more conventional plain jane type that is on the Charger. But there is that little area in the middle with holes that looks like there may be lights behind it so it could have made it into production.

I also noticed that some spy pictures are of a red vehicle with chrome or alum rims. This one is black with black rims. So there is more than 1 mule tooling around. I like the look of these rims too..

Great to see the pre-production Challengers on the road.

From the photo, it looks like the Challenger will have a spoiler and a racing-style gas cap on the left fender.

Re: 2008 Dodge Challenger Spy Shots

The idea of the vinyl is to hide the shape and details of the car. It will have the full width tail lights, the camo just covers the rest of it. As far as a spoiler they may offer one but what you are seeing is a deception to hide the shape. You see this often with camouflaged cars in the "spy" photos.

However the side of the black car looks as tall, slabsided and plain below the accent line as the show car! I wish they would have put the lower accent line on it like the originals had. Also if you look at the pics of the red car you will see that it lost some height from the accent line to the belt line (they should have taken it from below the accent line). It appears they did away with the widow ledge on the door and just used a flush mount weather strip for the window which took some of the height from the appearance of the metal. The glass grew in height which unfortunately loses some of that squat look that helped make the concept cars roof looked chopped. It is most noticable in the pic of the rear of the red car......... The door hadles changed to a pull up style....Actually though after seeing the pics of the red car I am getting excited to see the car. I may buy one after all...........

Re: 2008 Dodge Challenger Spy Shots

How have you determined that it that it has a flip top cap. I have blown up the photos of both the red and the black car. The photo of the black car is a little out of focus but it still does not appear to have a bulge that would identify it and on the red car the vinyl looks smooth. Also I am sure that there is a reason that it is unsafe but I just can't figure it out. What would be the issue? I have seen many cars over the years that have a similar placement of the gas filler door on both the left and the right. Thanks

Re: 2008 Dodge Challenger Spy Shots

I think the roof appears higher on the pre-production than on the concept! I have seen photos of the concept car with a driver sitting at the wheel and these photos. For me, the car lost some of its chopped roof appearance and also has been changed from a hard top to a coupe. I am sure most of you do not care...but I do! I have the sickening feeling that Chrysler has changed the proportions and will built "a two door 300". The CHALLENGER must be lower and lighter than the 300 and the Charger. I will be an unhappy camper if GM builds the CAMARO exactly as the concept as it was stated by GM itself and Chrysler do not... My first choice is a CHALLENGER built as the concept...or, if Chrysler do not deliver, a CAMARO built as the concept will then be my first choice! Do not show me a juicy steak and later try to have me buy cold cuts!
