Post Chrysler presses for more efficiency

Chrysler presses for more efficiency

~ Seeks union input, documents say | Trying to win new models for Canada ~

DaimlerChrysler Canada Ltd. is seeking local union contract changes in efforts to improve productivity and win new niche models for assembly plants in Windsor and Brampton.

The company won't confirm high-level discussions with the Canadian Auto Workers union, but an internal management document shows it is looking for ways to become more efficient and maintain three-shift operations at the two booming plants.

Senior CAW officials acknowledged the two sides talked about productivity earlier this month but have not focused yet on any possible proposals to cut costs.

"It was a meeting where we looked at things in general and how we could best position the Canadian plants and ourselves to get these products," CAW president Buzz Hargrove said in an interview yesterday.

DaimlerChrysler, which has experienced a resurgence in recent years, wants to make a decision on the new vehicles this summer.

DaimlerChrysler is considering building a minivan for Volkswagen in Windsor starting in July 2008 and the Dodge Challenger sports car in Brampton in April the same year, according to the internal document.
The company is also looking at its operations in St. Louis to assemble both new vehicles.

The document, obtained by the Toronto Star, says DaimlerChrysler estimates annual production of 50,000 Challengers and an investment of $145 million (U.S.) to ready the model.

Re: Chrysler presses for more efficiency

If true, then the limited production rumour is wrong, but the timing stinks. Mid 2008 is way too far out, things can change a lot between then and now, in the marketplace and in potential buyers' taste in cars. Also all the engine choices will probably change with a larger engine being offered.
But the downside is that the longer until the Challenger is in production, the more time DCX has to change their mind and cancel or change the program.

It helps the stress that was already loading up in my wallet though.. I hope the report is true.. 50,000 units means a lot of V6 like the look cars, and a slew of 5.7/6.1 (R/T)Hemi cars. Leaving the 6.4/7.2(SRT-8 or TA) to the big boys (and my garage )

Hmmm interesting number to ponder. Sounds like another hint at this being a reality.

Re: Challenger 50K in 2008 ?

Ok these reports that are coming out are totally contradictory. The last quoted article from a DCX VP had the car firmly boutiqued while this one has it mass produced at 50,000 units a year. Note to self: ignore all internet rumors, leaks and innuendo. Check.

Great point. We are all so hungry for some official word, and then when we get thrown tidbits by DCX execs, the emotional roller coaster takes off. It's really not worth it. I log on here about 7 to 10 times per day, hoping to see something new and substantial. I'm driving myself completely insane. My wife would concur that I am succeeding.
