First three production Dodge Challengers to be auctioned off

Posted Sep 17th 2007 10:55AM by John Neff

The production Dodge Challenger won't arrive until next year, but Dodge is already planning on how it's going to get the most out of those first three examples, which are all scheduled to be top of the line SRT-8 models with HEMI Orange paint, hood stripes and the 6.1L V8 engine. Car No. 1 that leaves the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant will go to the winning bidder of an auction to be held at the famous Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, AZ, which runs from January 12-20 of next year. We'll be there to watch the gavel fall, and when it does, all proceeds from the sale are going straight to notMYkid, an organization that promotes understanding of youth behavioral issues. The right to own Car No. 2 will be decided by an auction that starts earlier on Sept. 26th, 2007, though this one will be a private auction just for Dodge dealers. All proceeds from the sale of the second car will go to the United Way of Southeastern Michigan. Car No. 3, meanwhile, will be auctioned off on eBay, though Dodge reports it will have more details on that auction later.

So that makes it sound to me like SRT8's will be produced right from the start.

Or was this confirmed already?

Or would they really just make those 3 then a bunch of lower models before going back to a run of SRT8's much later?

Yeah, it seems that I heard words to this effect awhile back; that the first ones will/would be[ the SRTs] near clones of the Concept: which might/may have the 2008 numeral affixed. Then, I'm thinking will be the 2009 models which might come out around Labor Day of '08.{ In fact if this happens, I'm wondering if this would be a first in the auto industry: by bring out 2 different models year vehicles out in the same year!! Does anyone know if this has ever been done ?? }} Those models may come with other colors.engines etc.The 2009 SRT may have the 392 HEMI [ or something else ?/! Also, I'm guessing that the model year 2009 will also have either a V6 and/or the 5.7 HEMI and quite possibly[ most likely] thousands of those Challengers will be bought by rental car companies .

Well, this is an interesting opening scenario for the All New Dodge Challenger ! I'm also wondering whose idea this was ? I can understand doing the 1st one via Barrett-Jackson ...to in a way bridge the rare '70's models with the New . Who gets the [tax] write offs; Chrysler or the auctioneers?..and don't even get me started on the 3rd Challenger going the way of eBAY!!! How about auctioning it exclusively to one of us Challengertalkers ? EBay doesn't need anymore money!!!!!!

Re: First three production Dodge Challengers to be auctioned off

not identical to the concept car
The vehicles chosen to be auctioned for charity will all be Street and Racing Technology (SRT(R)) models. Each will feature a HEMI(R) Orange exterior, hood stripes, a 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 engine, and a five-speed automatic transmission with Autostick(R).

Correct,I stated 'near clones' . Also, now I'm wondering how #1 can/will be auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson in January when the Production Challenger won't be at the Chicago Auto Show until February '08 [ unless they mean the auction will be in 2009; but that sounds a bit late] ? I'm almost thinking / wishing Tommy LaSorda could pull a ' fast one' on Nardelli and bring a few "Orange & Blacks" to select Dodge dealers showrooms ...say around Halloween !!!!!

Number two just finished on ebay earlier this week. The bidding was for dealers only, not the general public. The final bid ended at just over $175,000

I suspect what they will do is have the concept car on the stage during the bidding, since they're about identical. It would be a major mistake for old ma mopar to auction #1 off at BJ and also not dominate the rest of the show by sponsoring it as they've done in the past.

If you've never been to one of these auctions they're a blast and I recommend you try it at least once. The tv broadcast doesn't do it justice. Besides the cars there's a lot of other really nice eye candy...

Yes, it must be a real charge to be at a B-J Auction; only 've seen clips on TV. Can anyone just attend ? I would think one has to be register'd or show real paper money.Or is there a separate area for just bidders and another for spectators ? ..Whoops..I looking at some of the answers ... http://www.barrett-jackson.com/event...r/howtobid.asp .. You are required to register as a bidder. ... The bidder’s registration fee provides you and a guest admission to all days of the auction, reserved ‘Bidder’s Only’ seating, reserved parking and hosted bar throughout the event. A complimentary invitation for two to the Opening Night Gala is also included....Sellers at Barrett-Jackson are asked to provide details about their car’s authenticity ...

anyone can attend. Last year it was 35 bucks at the door. You can buy your ticketson line prior to showing up, usually at a slight discount I think. There is a seperate area for pre approved bidders. The rest of th unwashed masses have access to always full bleachers or can just stand anyplace they can see.

The guys that run the show are smart: they know a lot of guys bring their wives so there's usually a pretty interesting vebndor area that has nothing to do with cars. Of curse there's lots of car stuff also.

I've found the best day to go is Friday because more folks are still at work. Saturday is the big one. You can check the auctrion schedule to see what day the #1 car will be auctioned. The cars are on the auction block for 2 minutes I think. Pretty cool to watch.

After the cars leave the stage they park out in the pavillion area. You can go walk around and see what's sold or what's waiting to be sold. The whole event is packed but it's well worth it.

There is also another place, not connected to the show, a few miles away called "The Pavillions" - there's an outdoor car show just about every weekend, usually around 300 or so cars are there of all types, plus bikes etc. 2 years ago I met a guy who had a really nice 71 Torino GT for sale on the parking let. It went for 40k. Really nice car.

I've seen Lambo's, Panteras, Super Birds, all local, at this place. Just depends on what someone decides to bring out on any given saturday.

It's a 4 hour drive for me so I don't go all that ofetn but it's always been good.

So, there you go.
