Im not sure about pony cars in nascar, these are trans am cars. With the deep inset grill the challenger wouldnt be good. Look what happened to the 68 charger, it then became the charger 500 with a flush grill and non-sail C piller, then finally the 69 daytona with wing and nose cone, one ugly car, but 200 mph out of the show room for only $3990.00, then plymouth superbird. Same with ford with the 429 in the toreno talledaga, and the merury cyclone spoiler. Those were stock cars. Those cars did sell on Mondays, and people could see themselves in the cars.
NASCAR seems to have forgotten "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday", which worked well for them back in the day. I would love to see a Challenger duking it out against a 'Stang. It looks like GM is pulling yet another stupid corporate blunder by not including the Camaro. Dohhhh!!!!
It's funny that GM says, that despite the Mustang and Challenger's appearance at NASCAR, they are not going with the Camaro but rather sticking with the Impala SS -- funny in the sense that they announced just the month before that the Impala SS was canceled, along with several other models. I'm guessing they are, in fact, gearing the Camaro up for NASCAR but want the hype all to themselves after Mustang and Challenger take to the track. Maybe using it as a reason to bring the Z28 into production -- which by the way they said was also canceled. Maybe to appease Obama? Say anything, do anything to get the money and once you have it -- business as usual.

If you go to most GM sites they are super happy GM is not putting the Camaro into Nascar. They feel that GM has done everything they can to distance the Camaro from the Mullet gold chain crowd of it's past by going the route of modern muscle car instead of retro. By putting the Camaro into Nascar you are instantly linking the Camaro to a series that has the same type of stereotype that they are trying to get away with.
The problem is that instead of sticking to their guns GM will change it's mind next week and put the Camaro into Nascar.
I pretty much have to watch NASCAR...Tony Stewart is my wife's cousin. It's a good thing I like to watch. It gives us someone to root for!
Do we get free tickets? Heck no! No family benefits here!

If that were indeed their intent they would have set the base price much higher to keep it out of that crowd's price range. Instead, they did the exact opposite which is an indicator that that is the exact crowd they are attempting to target and attract. For other more discerning and affluent buyers, there's the Corvette.

I'm not a fan of NASCAR by any means and rarely watch it so this may seem like a naive question, but don't the NASCAR rules say the base car has to be a production car? And if that's the case and the Impala SS is canceled, then if not the Camaro like GM said then they must have another car in mind for its NASCAR replacement -- Corvette? Minivan? It seems that they actually have no choice really but to go with the Camaro. They are kind of limited in the high performance coupe department. Something's certainly amiss with the two conflicting statements.

.
Thats funny...I read somewhere that over 50% of NASCAR fans have college degrees...like ME....
Does that sound like a demographic you would necessarily want to avoid?
I'd love to see a stock looking car on the track. Even local racing is losing this identification with the modified classes out there. The '69 Charger 500, Daytonas, Superbirds, Talledegos, were built for the street in numbers to qualify for track racing.
A stock model class racing should be offered somewhere in NASCARs lineup.
