Watching the pre-game coverage of the Super Bowl on NFL Network, they are showing video of the Colts leaving their hotel in Plantation, FL (Broward County). The Challenger (green & white one) along with a marked Charger Broward County Sheriff car is part of the police escort to the stadium.

The entire motorcade for the Colts consists of 32 police motorcycles, 2 marked vehicles, several unmarked vehicles, a SWAT team, and a helicopter flying overhead.

Giving the cops more means, (faster cop cars, +more radar guns like Geico donates, speed cameras, etc) to collect ticket penaltie$ for municipalities only hastens the demise of our freedoms, and encourages bureaucratic nannies like the draconian exhaust law proponents in Utah. Its not like most cops are chasing terrorists, or making a dent in illegal immigration, nor stopping the banksters (you know, like "gangsters"?) from ripping off the Republic. They don't need faster cars, (they can always radio ahead for backup, road blocks, helicopters and spike strips) They're mostly just giving traffic tickets to fill city coffers, at the expense of Joey Six-Pack, and Ma and Pa Kettle. That seems to be their primary function, and major raison d' etre. Increasing revenues for the cash-strapped states, while making their living off taxpayer's dollars, like parasites. Sure, sometimes we all need a cop, we still gotta have 'em, but what they got now is more than adequate to respond to a burglary or domestic dispute. They are supposed to be servants of We the People, our employees. Not our overlords in an overly well-equipped police state.

Well Vic......It's like this........I used to attend the Law Enforcement Day at the GM Proving Grounds in Milford, MI every year. This event was held (I imagine that Chrysler & Ford did the same) to allow government agencies to test and evaluate any and all models (except for the Corvette) for departmental purchase. This would include fleet cars for office use, patrol vehicles 4x4s, etc. One year, while I attended, I was sitting at a large table with a number of federal, state and local LE purchasers and asked them about buying and using Camaros, Mustangs and such as pursuit vehicles......You want to know what the response was?.......They're NOT intended as pursuit vehicles, but as a visual deterrent to potential speeders and the public. Most people don't realize that most state and local LE departments have pursuit policies as to how fast or how long to actively engage in a pursuit. See most departments have these policies due to the danger a high-speed pursuit creates to the general public. In order to limit the liability issues connected, high-speed pursuit are generally limited. But, the fact of departments purchasing Chargers, Challengers, Mustangs and such is simply for the visual impact. A lot of officers don't like them because of the limited room and the fact that you usually have to call for a regular cruiser if you need to transport someone to jail.

I dont know about visual deterrent. They most likely are be beefed up non-stock cop cars under the hood as well. I hear they do that kind stuff.

Thats not visual.

I'd still be willing to bet they got it off of a drug seizure. Being Broward county and all.

I saw on Cops when they raided the guys house in Portland for his 25 pot plants. They took his Corvette in the garage when he was'nt even home. Then left a message on his answering machine that they took his plants, and "thanks for the beautiful Corvette. We took that too".

I would say that the Gov spend too much effort on the losing battle in the drug war against American citizens. And that alot of cops, courts, prisons, taxpayers would rather spend time on more important thing like violent crimes, thefts, and terrorism etc...

I don't really mind that much if the police use v8 American cars. I think Chargers make awesome cops cars and you can fit 2 bad guys in the backseat quite easily as you can 3 kids.

And yeah. Makes me feel good to see em in a parade too.

Vehicles that are used for patrol and traffic are purchased. Not from seizures as you stated. They may take a seized vehicle, dress it up and use it as part of the DARE program, but most, if not all vehicles seized are auctioned and the proceeds go into a special fund (departments have to account for all funds received and used, just like any business does).

As far as "beefing" these cars up?.....I've only seen the addition of lights added......no beefing (if a LE tells you otherwise, he's blowing smoke up yer azz.....lmao). The reason departments don't do this, again is liability and the fact that most departments' budgets are extremely tight. Purchasing police fleet vehicles is expensive to begin with. Then they have to roll in the cost of having lights, decals and other equipment installed/maintained prior to the vehicle going on the road. Then there is the expense of vehicle maintenance and repairs to keep them operational. Adding on speed parts is not a luxury that departments have (although I did see something on tv recently about a PD Charger being "Hopped-up".....that is rare for the most part).
