Supercharged Challenger SRT8 hits the dyno!

Whenever a new performance vehicle makes it into the hands of eager customers, a run to the dyno never seems to be far behind. This has again proven to be the case with the new Dodge Challenger, as a company known as Speedfactory has just done the deed on its new steed. What sets this particular vehicle and its dyno numbers apart from other SRT8s, though, is its Vortech supercharger. Considering that the 6.1 liter HEMI V8 under the Challenger's long, scooped hood is the same one available these last few years in other SRT-branded eight-cylinder vehicles, we're not too surprised to see that the system is pretty mature and posts rather good horsepower and torque numbers right out of the gate.

Coming in at about 495 horses at the rear tires, Speedfactory surmises that its Challenger is making around six hundred ponies at the crank. If owners of the GT500 weren't concerned with the Challenger's performance numbers before, perhaps the addition of a supercharger to the HEMI will bring it more in line with the numbers coming from the Shelby's force-fed mill. Folks, it's muscle car time again, let the games begin!

Re: Supercharged Challenger SRT8 hits the dyno!

it may be on par-- stick the roots supercharger from the gt500 or even turbo the thing with some good size snails and it would not be a contest with the GT500

That is awesome! Anyone here think the stock SRT-8 platform will have any issues supporting the Vortec Supercharger?

The problems have started when you try to put more than 6 lbs of boost into the engine.

Re: Supercharged Challenger SRT8 hits the dyno!

Sweet setup, I wonder what ma mopar is developing for performance additions to not only the srt-8 but the r/t which is the one I most likely can afford

The compression ratio on the SRT 6.1 HEMI is 10.3:1 which is fine for naturally aspirated engines. In a nut shell high compression ratio when mixed with high boost levels can results in detonation and ultimately broken pistons. I predict there is going to be a lot of cracked and broken pistons and/or blown head gaskets as enthusiasts try to push the boost levels higher and higher. If a supercharger or turbo set-up is part of the game plan than owners should rebuild the engines with lower compression, forged aluminum pistons @ 9.1:1 or less, designed for use in boosted applications along with replacing the powered metal rods with good quality forged steel rods.
The SRT 6.1 HEMI appears to be well thought out and engineered for high performance duty.
o The basic, deep-skirted engine block structure was redesigned with reinforced bulkheads to handle higher loads.
o Cylinders are honed with torque plates to ensure a truer bore, to reduce friction and increase power.
o Oil squirters, aimed at the underside of each piston, are added to aid piston cooling for engine durability. (I am especially impressed with this feature, it could allow for a higher AFR during boost without fear of burning pistons.)
o The SRT 6.1-liter HEMI’s crankshaft is forged from micro-alloy steel and rotates in tri-metal main bearings for high-load capability. The crankshaft damper is retuned for higher engine speeds.
o A billet steel, high-strength camshaft features more overlap and lift for better performance.
o The hollow exhaust valve stems are filled with sodium to dissipate heat efficiently.

The Mopar enthusiasts have plenty to be excited about, SRT is engineering some good stuff and Dodge is building it.

Tremec 6 speed could improve those numbers a good bit more!
