So dealer calls yesterday and informs me that the number of cars coming to western Canada has been sorted out and they are allocated 4 units. Come in when you can and we will do some paperwork. I ask what MSRP is. He tells me $68K. Great see you tomorrow.
Today I wander in with my check for $2500 deposit and am excited to sign up for a new Hellcat. Dealer pulls out paperwork and says delivery will be 6 to 8 weeks and that I only have a choice of three units as another guy beat me in to be #1 on the list. No problem I say. By the way he says final price out the door will be $85K plus sales tax. I ****. I ask what happened to MSRP? He says dealer principle said to sell them for whatever the market will bear and as long as there are guys on the list its $85. He explains they think its going to be like 2008 when the Challenger first came out. 6 months of 15K over MSRP and then the market sorts itself out.
I put my checkbook in my wallet and said thanks but no thanks. Oh by the way I asked him about dealer loyalty. 6 new vehicles through my bank account in 3 years from that dealership. He apologized but.....
So I called another dealer and they also said $85 plus tax for a 2015 Hellcat but (and I give them credit for this) wait until early 2015 when the order banks open for 2016 and by then dealers will be back at MSRP with probably units parked on the lot.
So my biggest problem today was driving home in my 2013 SRT. :bigthumb:
A fair perspective though, how many times have any of us purchased a car 1000's below invoice. It happens.
Still, you don't gain any customer loyalty that way. With your history of past purchases, I would be annoyed. So annoyed I'd just stick with what you have.
Who? Shame them. Shame every dealership that puts that stupid, smirk on their face when saying "what the market will bear".
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Dodge has fantastic product, a great executives, great factories, and with the Hellcat have proven they listen.
It's a damned shame the Good 'Ole Boys Dealership™ stands between us, and a fantastic purchasing experience.
Seriously, dealerships need a wake up call and need to join the rest of us in the 21st century.
This is one the things I hope is broken is the dealership chokehold, Tesla is starting the trend and I hope it continues. BMW does 7% off MSRP for Euro delivery bypassing the dealers. Most don't even know the program exist because the dealers hate it as Germany sets the price and they have no say. They'll do it, but you have to ask and most will give the run around and they'll still try to get it back to MSRP.
Dealers wonder why we hate them so much.... if my next car is not a HC it will be a Euro deliver for sure...
I'm still waiting for availability of the colors I like. So no new challenger for me this year. Good thing actually, as I still like my 13 PCP SRT.
Even though a yellow Shaker Cat Pack package would definitely have my attention as I think the Hellcat is over hyped and over priced at the moment. So far not enough details about chassis, suspension, aftermarket parts information is out there yet. Waiting another year may be the best choice to make for 2015.
Loyalty means nothing these days. Some folks will pay whatever to be the first guy on the block to have a HC in their garage. More power to them. It'll be a cold day in he!! before I paid more $$$ than what is printed on the window sticker. Price markups, fair market value adjustments, market conditions, market gouging, can all kiss my a$$!
2 dealerships and 2 explanations in the Edmonton area.
I have meeting with Derrick this week. They have 2 ahead of me with deposited down on the first 2 Hellcat. I just bought a new Jeep there in February from my stepsons ex-girlfriend. $600 over invoice.
She told me they can put an order together. I probably won't see the car till mid to late October. They were limiting to how many deposits they can take due not knowing 100% how many they initially will get. Orders can go in beginning of August.
She knows my car and how well its taken care of. We'll get to price when I get there. If I'm ordering from the factory, I sure the hell will not pay more than msrp.
We'll see after my meeting if they are jerking me around.
2nd dealer when I got the oil change on Friday. Londonderry.
I had an hour to kill. Sat down in the office with 2 wet behind the ears salesmen.
They told me that they couldn't take deposits. They couldn't order because they could guarantee that they would even get the car. Even a factory order.
They were going to be extremely limited to maybe 120 cars in total for Canada. They weren't sure how much they were going to ask for them when they get them.
When I heard that they didn't know how much they were going to ask for them, I basically told them they didn't know what they were talking about and that I wouldn't be getting into a bidding war. I told them i had the numbers an will be paying at most msrp. Told them that I will be buying my new hellcat elsewhere.
They tried to tell me they had a letter from their DM and offered to show it to me to back up their statements. Told them they were full of crap and went back to the service department.
I don't mind getting my oil changed there because they are generally not that busy, but I doubt id ever buy a car there. Maybe that's why they're never that busy?
I don't think they are on the list for obvious reason. I doubt they move much product due to inflated prices... even used. High turn over of very young salespeople that seem more interested in messing with each other rather than asking the guy looking over the RT and viper in their show room if there were any question they could help me with out of courtesy.
I dealt with Londonderry a couple years ago when I was trying to buy a Yellow Jacket and the idiot sales guy said he knew where there was one but all he wanted from me was my credit card number and a $500 deposit to proceed, couldn't even get in two words without him stopping me and asking for my card number again before he would proceed any further. So I ended up giving my card number to him so he could proceed in finding me a Yellow Jacket. About an hour later I phoned back and talked to the sales manager and told him I didn't think his idiot sale guy handled it right . He agreed and refunded me my deposit and said he would have a talk with the sales guy. Never talk to them again, ended up buying one from JJ Stewart Motors in Ont.Day and night from Londonderry.
Who did you talk to Edmonton?? The Dealer principle here at Derrick has not said anything about market adj. just MSRP. Did you talk withGo Auto by some Chance??
Dealers are ruthless, always have been always will.
Dealers all claim they make no money on new cars yet in our town all the dealers have done major expansions and renovations.
sounds like the same greediness that happened here in BC back in the summer of 2008 is happening again in Alberta......I remember that all the dealers in the Vancouver area that were being allocated 2008 Challenger SRT-8s were asking 10-30k over MSRP (49999)....my dealer was asking 106000 !!.....the problem is the 63999 is a suggested price....the dealer can sell for less than that or more than that....and I truly believe that they have all talked to each other and decided to ask for a set price....in the case of the Edmonton area 85000 is the price they have all agreed on....I will contact my dealer tomorrow but considering just a few will make it to the Westcoast I would bet good money that no one in the Vancouver area will sell the Hellcat model for anything close to MSRP !....my advice is to wait until next year and purchase a 2016 model
Like anything else, they are worth (priced) whatever someone will pay. I don't fault dealers, they get a chance to make some extra bucks. This is supply and demand, plain and simple. Econ 101. Best advice is to wait.
Finished my meeting. There will be an market adjustment at Derrick. I asked about a factory order.
They said they think they will adjust those too as a factory order will take one out of their allotment.
They still aren't sure that the 63,900 will be the MSRP, but it is showing up on their system as it is for now.
Best they can do is put a deposit down to have first refusal. Deposit is refundable.
It can sit and I can wait. It's not like I don't have an awesome car to drive for the summer. A new Hellcat will have to sit in the garage from November to March, so I'm in no rush.
They've submitted 10 Hellcats for stock. Wither they get that many or not is luck of the draw I guess.
Instead of selling the initial allotment to your hardcore fans who know more about the product that you do, and will spend the next couple of weeks and months showing it off to more potential customers, thereby driving sales (of Hellcats or not) and by extension, profits on both the sales and service side, they'll sacrifice good ambassadorship just to make a quick buck that shows up on this month's ledger.
Dealerships in this country are really short-sighted. They really do think they're selling socks, and everyone has nothing better to do than wander in off the street and buy some. That's being polite and generous.
Having an actual example at the dealership for people to come look at, sit in and learn more about offsets the need for a single sale of a single car at a dealership. I can see a few showrooming them at an increased price, may promote more future orders. On the other hand, spending more than the Manufacturer asks seems a bit much to lots of us, and we won't pay it, we will find the dealer that will deal at the price we are willing to pay. May take a few months for the novelty to wear off, but with no limits on building them, think there will be plenty for everyone, eventually.
I won't be in the first wave, maybe the 2nd or 3rd if I decide to go that way. Would look nice in the garage but it'd be lonely.
I will continue to have fun with my 13 SRT. I will not pay above sticker for anything. I am comfortable with the size of my dick and don't need to pay extra to be first on the block with a new Hellcat. I will practice patience and wait.
Me too. I have given some serious thought to trading in my PCP '13 SRT for a Hellcat but not at 85K + GST. I will look at the Hellcat next March and see if some of the initial hype has worn off and I can do a factory order for MSRP. I am not a fan of the black wheels or the current colour offerings either. If PCP or an orange is a 2016 offering I would just as soon wait for that anyway.
