As I am patiently waiting for my HellCat I was thinking about how much of a difference there is between keys. I know the horsepower but if one wanted to drive around "sanely",is it possible to get the same economy out of the red key as the black key?
I think fuel economy is the same. The black went in a desk drawer and the red one stays on the key ring. The mileage doesn't seem all that different than my 392 but I haven't really gotten on it too much.
I actually get slightly better MPG in the Hellcat (using the red key) than I did in my 09 SRT. The black key was tested and went in the safe never to be seen again.
probably if you stay out of Sport or Track (engine throttle increased in those modes) -it takes a bit of getting used to when you first switch to Sport / Track modes as the throttle is more touchy.
After a bit of driving you acclimate, but you still end up giving more throttle in those modes -probably affects in-town MPG the most.
also - the automatic will hold gears longer in Sport or Track, and that will affect MPG - more so for in-town driving.
I concur with all three of the above posters. Black key went in my dresser door on first day of ownership.
The Hellcat drives just as sane as any other car, remember your right foot is the "governor" of that engine. There is also a "eco" mode if you are really trying to hypermile....
Black Key, what's that? LOL MPG is the same with both keys as long as your right foot is light. I didn't buy mind for the black key. If that were the case I would have kept my '12 and '15 SRT8's. Congrat's and welcome.
When I putz around town I just stay out of the throttle and drive the HC in street mode. Honestly doesn't seem that much different than my SP until you put the peddle down.
Has anybody used the black key against an SRT at the track? Just curious how it performs/feels. Is it a different tune? Throttle response? Boost? 500HP is still a bunch... just wondering if you had no idea it was a Hellcat (and were deaf and couldn't hear the whine!) and took it for a spin, would it just(!) feel like an SRT?

Think it whines less with less boost on the black key and probably would run a lot like an SRT. In ECO the second gear starts would tame it further and in valet, it will drive like an SXT.
