Re: Challenger Powertrain Question - Part 1 - Choose your Powertrain
I'd like to see an high performance automatic option that performs with exacting percision with a shift kit type shift pattern map. The 1995 Camaro Z28 with the 4L60-E automatic overdrive chirped from 1st to 2nd and sometimes even into third from the factory (I had the 3.23:1 optional rear gears mind you). That trans had a 3.06 low first planetary as well.
The autostick should NOT be like the left to right toggle like most autostick cars including every autostick car I've seen at DaimlerChrysler since the 90's. It should be UP DOWN similar to the SLAPSTICK of the early 70's. The SLAPSTICK prevented the operator from throwing it more than one gear forward at a time (there must have been some sort of mechanism that locked until the operator let go of the shifter or minimized pressure before slapping it into 2nd when power shifting from a stop for example. An Autostick/SlapStick set up (why not just call it SlapStick in the new car) toggling up and down instead of left and right would be great;even greater if a mode could be set for ONE UP SLAPS at a time. Alll true muscle cars had a rock hard auto as an available option. Ford had the FMX, Chrysler had the A727 and A727A, GM had the THM400. |

Re: Challenger Powertrain Question - Part 1 - Choose your Powertrain
Most important is to make it in the price range to compete with Mustang not the Corvette. Everyone is screaming for the 6.4l Hemi but if it cost $40k plus how many will actually buy one. This is a poll for what you would buy, not what you dream about. If they want to mass produce and sell alot they will make a version affordable to everyone ie: V6, V8-340hp, V8 425hp.

Re: Challenger Powertrain Question - Part 1 - Choose your Powertrain
Mileage wouldn't be a big issue since I would keep my Cherokee for daily driver/pack mule/workhorse type stuff, I wouldn't even want the DOD or whatever DCX calls it on one of these. For the auto, I wouldn't mind a separate shiftgate like Jag uses or preferably the Hurst ones from the 60's with less computer intervention that with the old autosticks supposedly had. Something like MoparG's 4L60 would be nice, or something that acts like a non-compurt controlled trans would be preferable to me.

Think it can't happen? We're not building any more Refineries, OK'ing any new Oil/Natural Gas Leases, and, the Chinese are gobbling up Oil like Beer at a Frat Party. The Liberals won't ok new Oil Production in this Country. I'll bet D/C has a few 4.7 L Hemis with Cyl Deactivation in test mules at this very minute on test tracks. If push came to shove, I would drive a new Challenger with one of those... LJB ![]() |
