Re: 5-speed Stick (moved)

There is one compelling reason to include a six speed in the challenger: its already in the concept. They didn't put a 5 speed or 4 speed or automatic in the concept they put in the very same 6 speed that we're asking for. Their specs have to include the 6 speed because the car was built with it! I'm pretty sure they will base the production vehicle off the concept specs, and these already have accomodation for the 6 speed.

Furthermore, that 6 speed has been proven to take the worst kind of abuse from its use in the viper (just like the 4 speed in the old 1970 hemi challenger was proven nearly indestructible). Has the 5 speed been in anything of real consequence? Is it the same transmission only in 5 speed form or is it a completely different transmission? I'm actually asking the question cause I'd really like to know, if anyone can post a link to the specs for the thing that would be helpful. I will say the 6th gear would be *really nice* but not essential (for me) IF (and only if) the transmission is as tuff as what DCX puts in the high end vipers.

The point is I'm interested in ruggedness (which the 6 speed is renowned for) more than the 6th gear itself, although I agree in this day and age not having a 6 speed in a high end muscle car is kind of inexcusable.

As to the weight I can't comment because its all pure speculation at this point. I really hope they manage to shave a few hundred pounds off the thing - 3800 to 3900 sounds like a good target (considering the extra stuff modern cars have to carry around).

Re: The Challenger's Coming!!!!!!....the Challenger's Coming!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love a 6.4L Auto in the show car orange with the black CF hood and a Black interior with orange piping in the seats.

Re: 5-speed Stick (moved)

They're probablly using a 5 speed to keep costs down guys. Personally I'm fine with it. I drove my 5.0 Mustang GT, 5 speed (stick of course) for 9 years as a daily driver and loved it.

Remember the Challenger will have an IRS so it's already more expensive out of the gate. Also MDS may help with the gas mileage part and not having a 6th gear.

Re: 5-speed Stick (moved)

The pictures shown in the press conference show the car with the manual trans and the 6.1L. I have read before it would be with the 6 speed like the viper and the SRT-10 truck??? Who knows

Thank you Challenger Nut, this guy is too full of himself to listen or care about what anyone else thinks. It's all about him, perfection is tough for the rest of us to understand. It seems like the BMW drivers here think that they pretty much know everything and have the duty to enlighten us mere mortals.
I agree completely, drop the size some, cut off pounds and put a 6 speed in it. The original E-bodys weren't behind the times, this one shouldn't be either. I think that 3700-3800 pounds would be acceptable to me. The great part about losing weight will be the chance to design in some of the original cars' sleekness and get rid of the 4x4 look of the prototype.
MikeF,

I wouldn't start holding your breath... If you expect the Challenger to be 3700 - 3800 pds then you should start picking out your favorite Mustang.

If I have to sacrifice independent rear suspension, stability control, not too mention smaller interior to save a couple hundred pounds, forget it. It's not going to happen...

I can live with a slightly slower car for comfort and safety.

I do agree with you on the 6 speed transmission. In this day and age, and competiveness, I believe a 6 speed standard should be mandatory. Is it a deal breaker? No, I would probably choose a 5 sp. Auto if the 6 speed is not offered.

Will

Re: 5-speed Stick (moved)

If I remember from when the concept first came out, it has the Tremec T56, the same tranny as the Viper, the Cobra Mustangs and the Corvette. It is a pretty tough, reliable unit and isn't real expensive.

Re: 5-speed Stick (moved)

I think any modern muscle car today should have a 6 speed in it. I own an 04 GTO with a 6sp and it nice to be able to run 75-80 and not spin over 2000 rpm. In 5th it jumps about 600 to 800 rpm. If you dont want to pay a gas guzzler charge on it they had better put a 6sp in it.

Re: 5-speed Stick (moved)

Currently, the 5.7l Hemi doesn't have a gas guzzler tax but the 6.1l does.

On the GTO if memory is correct, the 4 sp. auto had a gas guzzler tax but the 6 speed didn't.

Hopefully, a 6.1 Hemi with a 6 sp. manual won't either.

Re: 5-speed Stick (moved)

i dont want IRS. I dont want DVD. I dont want Navigation. I dont want warming cupholders and I dont want massaging warmed seats.

Dodge uses the t56 in 3 stock vehicles anyway, GM used it and Ford used it... it should NOT be expensive to use.
