So, last year we upgraded from our 2011 R/T, Automatic, STP, Exterior Appearance Package in Blackberry Pearl... to a 2015 R/T Plus, Automatic, Shaker, STP in B5 Blue.
On the 2011, I had installed Flowmaster Super 44 mufflers and got rid of the resonators and it sounded great.
First question, is the pipe from the "X" back still 2 1/4 on the R/T?
Next, I don't want to screw anything up if the car has the active exhaust system. I have looked under and can't seem to see the servos. Can you see them without putting the car on a lift?
Lastly, looking under the car, it almost looks like it has bigger, "flowmaster looking" mufflers behind the "X". Did they put performance mufflers on the R/T Plus? (or with the Shaker package maybe?...)
Ok, so no active exhaust. That's good to know. I just need to see what kind of mufflers it has on it from the factory and then go from there.
On our 2011, I got the mufflers (flowmaster super 44s) for $170.00 and had the resonators removed and the new mufflers and pipe installed for another $300.00.
If you want bang for your buck have a muffler shop remove the mid-mufflers (replace with straight pipe) but leave the resonators. I paid my guy $100 and I think it sounds great.
Why the 2 1/4 on the A8 and the 2 1/2 performance exhaust on the manual? Just because the manual is considered more of a performance car? To keep the 0-60 numbers close by choking the A8 version a little?
I'm guessing adding a cat back 2 1/2 of some sort to the auto is an easy way to get the few HP/TQ numbers the manual has over the auto and make it sound better. What's not to like there...

Probably to keep the A8 system a little more quiet to help avoid drone and the motorboat sound which you can get with the MDS. Always been like this even with A5 and 5.7L Charger has 2.25" also.
The stock exhaust muffler is nothing special. As stated above, cut them out and straight pipe them in (but keep the resonators). Sounds much better than stock.

Does anyone know why the scat pack sounds so good? Do they use high flow cats and performance mufflers from the factory? I wonder what brand and what the setup is.
Well, I went ahead and ordered the 2 1/4 inch Flow Master super 44s, and did the same thing as we did on our 2011. Sounds great, especially in Sport mode cruising around town. Not much drone, just sounds like a muscle car, as it should.
