Guys, thanks for pointing this out. I only finance cars through my credit union, so I'll definitely be keeping this in mind!
Here's the story on the $1,000 rebate...
Chrysler LLC has joined a program that gives credit union members in participating states discounts on vehicles, becoming the second of the Detroit Three to sign on.
Chrysler, along with the Michigan Credit Union League, on Tuesday announced the automaker’s contract for the Invest in America program, an initiative started this year aimed at jump-starting sales and bringing more lending business through credit union doors.
“The liquidity and available capital can be a tremendous boost to domestic auto sales,” Michigan Credit Union League CEO Dave Adams said in a conference call Tuesday.
General Motors Corp. was the first automaker in the program, limited to credit union members in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. Chrysler’s contract with CUcorp, a marketer affiliated with the Michigan league, includes those four states and an additional eight: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
Chrysler’s consumer incentive is structured differently as well. General Motors allows credit union members in the four-state region to receive supplier pricing, typically 4 percent to 5 percent off the sticker price depending on the vehicle. Chrysler is offering a cash rebate of $500 for small cars and $1,000 for other new vehicles. Its program, unlike GM’s, requires credit union financing.
Credit unions remain in talks with Ford Motor Co., Adams said.
The programs for GM and Chrysler run through the first half of 2009.
