Re: Automatic or Stick which R/T do you prefer and why?

Oh - I see CAGS is the skip shift. Well, I skip shift my current car on my own all the time to save gas so it is no problem for me. As long as I can shift it normally when I am winding it out....

Hasn't the auto tranny traditionally been the more expensive option. Why are they making you guys pay more for it than the auto?

Re: Automatic or Stick which R/T do you prefer and why?

Because it's the T-6060 Transmission and not the lesser version.

"Lesser" version:
Borg-Warner T-56 transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Older corvettes, vipers, etc. (see link for full list) used this older transmission.

The version we get:
Tremec TR-6060 transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The newer model revisions like '08 Viper, '08 Corvette, '07 Mustang Shelby GT500, etc. (see link for full list) use this newer transmission.

The T-6060 far surpasses what the Challenger would technically "need". As mentioned, Vipers and Corvettes sport this transmission. Because we're getting this extreme performance transmission, it raises the cost of the car. If they went with a "normal" transmission that fit with what the Challenger needs, I doubt it would've raised the cost.

Given the cost of the T-6060 transmission, the couple-o-hundred dollars we pay for it is an insane bargain. I'm not complaining

I know it is a good manual vs some out there but it is still a manual none the less. It probably has more to do with supply. What is the option price on the manual vs auto?I heard the guts are different on the chally manual vs the one from the viper. Could have been BS though. I sure am glad chrysler is giving the option to folks. I feel sorry for blacktop everywhere.

Re: Automatic or Stick which R/T do you prefer and why?

Nope not supply, this trans and the type of clutch is much more $$$ than the auto trans is.

In the old days a cheap 3 or 4 gear and a basic clutch was less, not the new ones.

Like getting a granny low 5 spd in a Fritto Lay truck.. big bucks compared to an auto trans unless you are talking Allison's right.

anyway it is only a few $$ more and that option price includes the trac pack and more goodies.

Hell if I had the $$ I want an auto and a stick SRT, one tored and one black right...

Re: Automatic or Stick which R/T do you prefer and why?

DJN, I think the fun factor is the think most stick owners like. An auto is great to but more as just a car that you dont want to be shifting etc.

It is like there a big cruiser motorcyles that have an auto trans. I can not even imagine either one of my Harleys not having a manual trans, regardless how well an auto works. I need to be in controll and like the feel of shifing. That is what you nede to think of most. do you or dont you want to be shifting all the time, will you get tired of having to shift?

Fo me it is a 6spd srt.. gotta have it.

enjoy, they are all good!

Re: Automatic or Stick which R/T do you prefer and why?

I prefer the manual. It comes off as more fun, and also allows me more control over the vehicle in general. The manual-automatic isn't as fun, and is slow to shift. The Manuals are also just..more fun. I mean, you can't bang gears to redline in an automatic, then downshift, and get slammed back in to your seat to rip past someone on the track (Or other legal and non-dangerous high-speed driving activities in no way involving illegal street racing on the highways whatsoever. ), not to mention the exhaust burble when you downshift to a stop is just..sublime.

That's another thing, on the Challenger. The exhaust note is more aggressive for the manual-equipped vehicles, as where the automatic sounds a bit more toned down. And I'll play the classic card: It's not muscle if it's not manual.

That is true.

Since the original post / inquiry was specifically about the R/T version, that's what I addressed. I'll mention that all SRTs '09+ do include anti-spin diff as part of that model in the future to avoid the confusion.

Some of this maybe recovering the costs of emissions certification and durabiltiy testing.

Since Challenger is the only model so far with the 5.7/6.1 V8 with the TR-6060, it is a small % of all the V8 models Chrysler builds among all their models. If you look at all the LX V8 variants (300C, Charger, Magnum) that have been made since they started, it will take years before MTX production will catch up to those numbers - if it does.

Each time a mfgr. comes out with a new engine or transmission package, it must go through EPA emissions testing and certification. It goes through a 50,000 mile emissions durabilty test - and keep in mind there are new engine ECM's and programming required for the manual tranny apps. with OBD-II. All that co$t$ a lot.

Then it will go through hot and cold climate testing as well as mechanical durabiltiy testing before it goes into regular production.

Another point is the manuals don't have MDS, which required another modification compared to the rest of the 5.7 V8 production for 2009 going forward.

For example: Viper now uses V10 + TR6060, but being a low production niche vehicle, it's priced to recover the development costs at faster rate and contribute to the company's bottom line.
