Rattling sound

I have an 09' R/T with the 6 speed. I just put in my hurst shifter this week. The problem is that the transmission is rattling, A LOT. It is making that sound like when you are in the wrong gear and try to go and it doesnt have enough power. It is doing this even in neutral. When I engage the clutch it goes away. It also sometimes has a high pitch whine in 1st and 2nd gear.

Anyone have any ideas? Or should I get this to the dealership ASAP? Thanks!

Get it to the dealer.
There are problems with some of the new Tremec 6 speeds.
It is affecting Challengers and Camaros (and Mustangs, I heard?)
GM has deemed the problem so bad that shipment of new 6 speed SSs has been temporarily suspended, and many cars have been recalled.
I've even heard (on this forum) of one zero mile SRT making crunching noises from the tranny while being unloaded from the trailer at the dealership.
The dealers are, no doubt, already aware of this. Will probably just replace the tranny under warranty, and be done with it.

Good luck. Please keep us posted.

Did the noise start as soon as you installed the new shifter?

It has been occasionally for a while. Got louder since I installed the hurst. The tranny has always had a little big of a tough time going into 2nd though.

You didn't say how many miles your R/T has on it.
Mine used to be sort of "notchy" going into second. Would almost clunk into gear.
That has smoothed out nicely.
I didn't ask about the new shifter because I figured you would have put 2 and 2 together if the problem had only shown up after the shifter was installed.
If it was acting up before that, you definitely need to take it to the dealer.

My car rolled over 10,000 miles this weekend. I'm going to be taking it to the dealer this week.

The Hurst definitely 'funnels' some additional trans noise into the cabin. I have a dashboard buzz that was very intermittent that is full-time now that I've got one installed (which actually is a good thing). It could be the rattle was there for a while. As for the 2nd gear stiffness, if it doesn't get better as the tranny warms up, you probably want to have it checked.

I have a post in the track talk section about this. I took my car to them on Monday. Have no news to report other then they are trying to find another one to compair it to. I put my shifter in Sat a week ago and had a little more noise, no problem. went to the track last fri. now all sorts of noise sounds just like what you said only mine still shifts fine. Sounds like a Old one ton with granny gear. I will let you know what they find. So far have been told they just might let me take it a break it. The only problem with that is that my wife drives it to work in a fairly bad area of Dekalb Co Near Atlanta. And I dont want her sitting somewhere on the side of the road.

So I took my hurst shifter out and I am pretty sure it was the culprit. There were rub marks on the bottom side of the arms that hold it to the transmission. It looked like the output shaft plate was rubbing on the bottom of the shifter arms. I dont know what exactly its called. This would explain the excessive vibration in the car and probably caused vibrations throughout the transmission as well.

I would definitely be taking some pictures to send to Hurst. They need to take care of you. Those shifters aren't cheap.
