What about an SRT Exhaust on an R/T Auto?

Hey, does anyone know what a stock SRT exhaust from the cat back would do on an R/T automatic? I.e. would it be much louder than R/T stock exhaust? How much better would the flowrate be? Will the hangers line up? And the #1 question: will it create drone?
I don't know much about exhaust, but I want mine louder and w/o drone, and the SRT has an x-pipe and larger diameter exhaust. It seems to me like it might work out well, but like I said, I am no exhaust expert by far. I know someone out there has tried it, or at least looked into it before me...

THE SRT Exhaust is bigger but then it's reduced down to the same size inlet as the rt in the muffler and reso. you'll have to reduce the clamp area down to the size of the rt exhaust, that's where you'd remove the rt ex and install the srt ex. The x pipe in the srt 8 is false just like the rt but I believe the middle reso is a common reso for both banks of exhaust which in turn be the " X " pipe...

Lots of guys run 6.1 exhaust on 5.7's. They flow more freely but I'm not sure what the sound will be if you have MDS. Buy some 6.1 mids and you'd see a more significant gain. In years passed some "X" pipes were legit and some were not. That's Dodge for ya!

So are the resonators the same then? I think that is the biggest problem now witht he R/T auto exhaust. The resonators make it way too quiet, but without them you get horrible drone. I was thinking if they were larger diameter then I could get more flow and louder sound without the drone. If they are the same, then it seems like it would be a waste of time. Thoughts?

Jack, I have a Charger RT with Flowmaster 40's and no resonators. The drone will drive you insane on a long trip, espescially when the MDS kicks in.
I think you would be better off putting a Corsa system on your car. The one designed for the 5.7, not the 6.1. I say this because they designed this system for an engine that has MDS. Since the 6.1 does not have MDS, they use a different design. Running 4 cylinders through an open exhaust system sounds like crap. Having mufflers and resonators designed specifically for your engine IMO would be the best way to go.

If your going to experiment, I'd reccomend cutting the center muffler off and keeping the resonators. This will cut the drone, but will be quite a bit louder than the stock exhaust. Did this on an SRT8 Charger, it was really loud, and no drone.

Good luck!

Vett,
I have been thinking about that, but the Corsas seem pretty steep and they sound sort of mellow to me as well (at least the video on youtube does). Isn't there something louder and less restrictive that I can put in place of the resonators without getting drone? I've noticed a couple of the systems put mufflers where the resonators are and use an x-pipe where the suitcase is. Is it the location of the resonators or is it that they are so restrictive or is it something in their particular design that eliminates the drone? I'm still trying to figure this out.
If I had known it was such a problem I would have just gotten a 6-speed, slapped Jones Full Boar and eleminated the resonators for a couple hundred bucks and been done with it!

Jack, yes the Corsa is steep and it is pretty quiet at idle (why flaunt it), but it's all business when you step on the gas. I really think if you cut the mufflers (most restrictive part of your exhaust) you will get the loudness you want. I think the resonators are what eliminates most of the drone. Having a loud muffler right under the drivers seat is where you really get the vibration ad hear the drone. If you push that sound to the back of the car it won't be so loud in the cabin. A muffler shop can cut it off and put straight pipes on for about a buck and a half. Also, I believe a predator for the 5.7 can turn off the MDS. You will lose a bit of gas mileage, but 8 cylinders aounds a heck of a lot better than 4 cylinders does.

The auto's stock exhaust system is much more quiet by comparison to the 6 speed; no doubt to combat the drone for when the transmission shifts low in the rpm range and causes the engine to lug a bit. Also, when MDS kicks in, the change in exhaust note is less than pleasing ( I usually describe it as a deep buzzing sound, similar to a 4 cyl. fart can muffler). I should say, that the stock exhaust does a good job of killing this sound, but it also kills the overall sound as well. The MDS exhaust note is much more noticeable with most aftermarket systems, primarily because they increase the overall sound/volume.
As for construction, the stock auto exhaust has one "suitcase" style muffler (kinda big square looking thing) where both pipes run into it and out of it. The 6 speed had two separate bottle style mufflers mounted in the same area under the vehicle. Both have rear resonators mounted just behind the exhaust tips as well. The auto exhaust is quite a few pounds heavier because of the larger muffler too.
