Thats what i thought. After some good research i found that performance wise the 20's netted you very little over the 18's in the Challengers case. I went with the 18's because the 20's looked TOO 21st century for this car. Probably ok for a new Camaro imo.

The rim size is bigger, but not the overall tire diameter. It remains basically the same. So you will see some gain. They add the 3.91 gears to the added strain of the 20's off of the tranny and put it on the rear axle.

They did the same in the ram trucks

Re: Who's getting 20" Wheels?

The tire size used on the 20"s is about .58 inches taller than the tires they are using the on 18" wheels.

The 235/55-18's are about 28.1 inches high. The 245/45-20's are 28.68 inches high.

That .58 inches in taller tire height negates the use of the shorter gears in the 20" application.

If i'm correct, you get the better/bigger brakes with the 20 inch wheels as well. It's nice to see a 3.91 available, kinda like old days...

Re: Who's getting 20" Wheels?

I got the 20" because of the look of the rims, I do not like the look of the 18's. I prefer the heritage rims the best but as I didn't want to wait, I went with the 20's.

i had an excell program written out to figure all of that up at some point. Ill have to find it again. But basically you can put in two gear sizes and wheel sizes, then it would ouput the difference in speed at a given rpm, or difference in rpms at a given speed. 1/2" isnt much coming off the line but at higher speeds it would definately show up on the speedometer

the bigger brakes would be worth it alone. what is the cost of the 20"s? $1200 or so?

Re: Who's getting 20" Wheels?

Here is some information courtesy of a neat program called GearCalc. I punched in all the gear information available at allpar.com and used tire sizes from dodge.com and this is what came up.

Information for '09 R/T w/18" wheels (3.73)
Code:
Gear Mph per 1000 RPM Mph @5800 RPM
----------------------------------------
  1 7.57 44
  2 10.70 62
  3 15.39 89

Re: Who's getting 20" Wheels?

I personally plan on using the SRT8 wheels if I can find some second-hand. I don't want the R/T 20's. They look..exactly like the 18"s, plus 2 inches. :P No style.

Re: Who's getting 20" Wheels?

I agree. I am not a big fan of the available wheels for the R/T and I am not usually one to put aftermarket wheels on my cars.
