After Market Steering Wheels?

Has anyone thought of changing the steering wheel? I think the stock one is boring and think a wood accented one would be cool. Would something like this work?
Chrysler/Dodge - English Burl/Black Steering Wheel [344200] - $425.00 : Real Wood & Leather Steering Wheels- Custom Wood Leather Steering Wheels, Tail Lights, Billet Grilles, Molded Dash Kits, Premium Automotive Accessories, Interior Upgrade Packages
Also, I assume you would have to have a dealer do the swap considering the audio controls and the airbag.

Re: After Market Steering Wheels?

The switch would be extremely difficult and expensive. I doubt that any dealer would attempt it because of the liability issue (i.e., the after-market wheel was not crash-tested for the Challenger).

You would be better off waiting to see if Dodge comes up with a new wheel for the 2010 Challengers and switch at that time.

Re: After Market Steering Wheels?

That is what I thought. I was surprised to see so many wheels available for Chargers - and I think the are the same as the Challenger so I figured a swap would not be out of the question.

Re: After Market Steering Wheels?

Actually this switch isn't that complicated. You do need a steering wheel puller though. I have changed the airbag steering wheel on my Dakota with the radio controls and airbag to a custom wheel. There are just a couple of wire connections to the air bag and radio buttons. Check with the source of the steering wheels and I'm sure they will tell you the details. BTW Thanks for the link. I'm interested in the second one with the aluminum look for mine.

Re: After Market Steering Wheels?

If you are going to change the steering wheel, PLEASE!!! disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes before disconnecting anything!!! All yellow wires are SRS [airbag] wiring. If it is a quality wheel the switch should be easy. Remember when you are done, connect the battery and turn the key with you outside of the vehicle remember there is a bag on the passenger side and one coming out of the roof next to the window. If you have a problem, this is when it will happen. BIG BANG! I have never seen this happen on a reconnect but they say it is possible. lol Garylee

Re: After Market Steering Wheels?

If you happen to do any servicing of the air bag system, TURN THE KEY ON PRIOR TO HOOKING UP THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE AND ENSURE NO ONE IS IN THE VEHICLE OR NEAR THE AIR BAGS. Then hook up the negative cable. This will ensure that no one is in the firing line of any air bag in the unlikely event of an air bag deployment.

Glad you guys pointed that out. Follow the correct steps and it's a snap.
