Factory Headers

Well, I was poking around under the hood of my new Scat Pack the other day and noticed what looks like factory shorty headers. Is this correct?

Thanks!
Ray

That's the SRT 392 Motor, in full. Yes there are factorys shorty headers. Engine has oil squirters to cool the pistons as well.

Shorty headers have been installed on SRTs since 2008. Look at this model of a 6.1 engine.

They deliver more horsepower and torque from idle to the mid-RPM range than long tube headers. This makes them perfect for street use. Long tube after market headers, however, do the best job building horsepower and torque from mid-to-high RPMs. They are great if you plan to track your car.

Here is the physics behind this. Long tubes create a deep pressure depression that pulls very hard on the intake during overlap. This gets the speed of the incoming mixture up well before it would be if it just depended on piston movement. This enhances the ramming of mixture into the cylinder. Shorties also do a good job of emptying the cylinder of exhaust but don't offer much ram effect because they don't generate very strong negative pressure waves.

Will these headers bolt on to a 5.7L Challenger R/T? Would I be better served going aftermarket? I think shortys would best serve my purpose. A little more power, and I don't go to the track.... yet.

Installing the factory "shorties" has been a very popular swap for 5.7 owners. A lot of work, as clearances are very tight, but you'll learn a few new cuss words in the process! lol

You'll need the 6.4 midpipes too. Reasonably cheap to do, if you buy some take offs from a 6.1/6.4, and do the work yourself. Gets expensive for the labor if you have someone else do it.

What kind of power gains would a 5.7 owner expect to see from this type of swap?

Some people just gotta be different...

Word on the street is 15-20 horsepower, and I'm not sure if that's with high flow cats or going catless.
