2 year wait with a down payment WOW!

Charlotte couple waits two years for new car

CHARLOTTE - If you think you waited a long time for your new car, consider the case of David and Kaye Persell.

The Persells, it so happens, are the lucky owners of a 1971 Dodge Hemi Challenger. Orange. It's a car that has muscles on its muscles, and the Persells love it dearly.

So, in 2006, when Chrysler resurrected the Challenger nameplate as a concept car, then announced it would put the car into limited production, the Persells decided to, as David put it in an e-mail to me, "pursue the purchase."

He put it that way because success was by no means assured. It was one of those situations where you slap down a $1,000 deposit, fill out your order, and hope you're lucky enough to get the chance - at some point in the distant future - to spend $42,000 on a car that wouldn't exactly baby you at the gas pump.

Assuming, of course, that Chrysler actually decided to build the car.

In other words, the deal wasn't for everybody. It was, however, for the Persells. The Charlotte couple just didn't realize, when they wrote their deposit check, that the pursuit would last two years.

They picked up their 2008 Challenger last week. Although they were glad to get it, when I asked her if it was worth the trouble, she sighed.

"We love the car," Kaye said, "but we didn't know, in 2006, that it would turn into this."

For more on this report, read Thursday's Lansing State Journal.
