3 Series Question

The BMW 3 series is considered by some to be the reference 2 door coupe. The 335i is rwd, has a 300hp turbocharged six cylinder with manual tranny of course and it gets 26 mpg. The new M3 will have a 414 hp V8.

North American BMW 3 series sales volume for November was 11,579.

Does anyone think that the Challenger will compete with the BMW 3 series???

You know darn well that Motor Trend will do a shootout between Camaro, Challenger, Mustang, Nissan GT-R and M3. What will be the outcome?

Re: 3 Series Question

I don't think some "yuppy" driving a "beamer" could even understand what the Challenger stands/stood for let alone have it on their "which car should I lease" list!! Mopar people are just that; Mopar people!! 3 series beamers should stay where they belong; in some 22 year old girls spot in the garage next to mom and dad's 740 !!!!

Demographics aside, are you saying that the Challenger will not be competitive sales wise in the 2 door coupe segment? Do you think only Mopar people will "get" this car?

What happens if an M3 blows the doors off an SRT? What about the Nissan Gt-R? It will have 480 hp!!!!

Re: 3 Series Question

Hey Wirewilly, is your name true to the meaning that your willy is the size of wire? This makes me nderstand more why you do not get it. Cars are cars and it does not matter who makes them. I am interested in all cars and segments. I own a 93 CHEVROLET Corvette convertible and a 2001 BMW M5 and have my name and deposit down on a Challenger. A great car is just that, a great car - whether it is made by Ford, Dodge, BMW, Mercedes or Ferrari does not matter to me. I actually had my name down on a GT500 convertible and pulled out becuase I did not like the performance reviews from both auto journalists and regular owners - some think I was crazy to pass one up. I personally car more about overall performance than who makes the car. I am not saying everyone is like that. Some are loyal to the manufacturer no matter what, and I get that as well. I am now waiting for a convertible Challenger, and am hoping one is made and that it has a better weight ditribution than the GT500. Plus I did not like the solid axle on the GT500 and the affect on cornering ability (another personal preference).

Let's just hope that the Challenger comes as a 6.4 litre, 6 speed convertible real soon.

Nope, not kidding. In 2008/2009 there is going to be quite a few real performance cars available. In the early nineties the GM F body put a hurtin' on the Z car and Supra sales. I am wondering if people think the Challenger will compete sales wise with the Nissan and BMW. If the Challenger and Camaro are only going after the Mustangs 10,000 monthly sales I do not see how the three will survive very long. I think these cars should be built for a wider audience to ensure sales. Some of the advertising Dodge has used in the past might not make it past the monster truck crowd. Not that here is anything wrong with monster trucks.

Some of the guys that got left hangin' when Dodge killed the Neon have probaly been tweaking on an Eclipse for a few years. These guys might now have the income to buy a GT-R. I would be very sad if I got my doors blown off by a Nissan!

I was trying to talk about something besides "This dealer tried to rape me" or "There better be plum crazy" conversations.

Re: 3 Series Question

It goes without saying that the car mags will do a Challenger / Mustang / Camaro shootout. And call it some sort of new Pony/Muscle Car shootout.

But sometimes they definitely will pick a broader spectrum to do a comparative shootout. And you raise an interesting question. I think the GT-R will more often show up in a Corvette or Supercar shootout as that's how Nissan is promoting it.

The M3 is an interesting thought, though. Big engine thrown into a 2-door "family-style" car with RWD. I can see it making its way into some sort of comparison with a Challenger. It would be really interesting to see the final numbers (weight, power, balance) of those cars side by side.

For people who read more car magazines more religiously than I do: Did anybody ever do any sort of 300 or Charger SRT8 shootout with, say, an M5 or other sort of car that may not feel exactly like it's in the same segment?

Prepare to cry! The GT-R is in the supercar league with Lambos, Ferraris, Porsche twin turbos etc etc. A $40,000 car from dodge is not going to exactly scare those dudes. Now a used viper at $50,000 might!

I do think there will be tests with cars in the same performance segment, even if they are not exactly the same type of cars. You bring up a valid question!

Re: 3 Series Question

Why are we talking about rice and struttle burners, anyway. The willy wire joke was very original, Challengerman. Although I don't think my wife would understand it because of the premium she has to pay for Magnum size condoms at Rite Aid every month.!!!!
