I'm not worried and would never not buy a car because it has a few extra hundred pounds on it.Its the style I'm looking for not to blow some kid off the road in his scion!
The weight is a non issue!

Ooooooh, I wouldn't go as far as saying weight is not a issue........Yet, to put think into perspect of the Challenger is only a little heavier! That said, the Challenger could afford to loose a couple of hundred lbs nonetheless. Which, is why I would like to see a simplier and cleaner Challenger! Maybe a Hemi Powered S/E without all of the fluff............say with light weight front fenders/hood and fewer options! (i.e. emblems, electronics, etc.)

In the true sense of the muscle car definition you hit it on the head unfortunately the days of horse shoeing big engines into lower end production models is long gone.
It is a shame because that was the true intent of the entire muscle car genre.

For me ,the weight isn't an issue at all a few years back I picked up a loaded c5 and fits the bill perfectly if I want to zip around town.
The horse power ratio to weight on the srt will be very suitable for a daily driver .The average driver will also get used to the weight as I know many had to with the 300 and the magnum.
If this is your only set of wheels then maybe weight would be an issue depending on what you where to do with it.
As a cruiser it gonna be just fine for 90% of the buying public I have watched many a vid on you tube with charger srt 8's mopping up on much lighter weight imports with turbos and nos.

No doubt the dodge boys should work on a hood and trunk lid replacement and possibly front fenders for a so called light weight package its a great idea and I'm sure the after market will eat it up.
Gotta admit they gave us a great platform to work from with whats about to happen with fuel going to 5.00 a gallon soon this is gonna kill all the pony cars it is a shame its happening all over again.
Thinking about it, maybe if the se and rt are the remaining available models in a few years you may see your wish come true things are changing day to day.

I bet there are many who have event lost their homes since they slapped down cash on this car its that bad out there right now,and some 08's may sit at dealers never know in todays economy.

Really, I don't think most of us have worry to much about what Chrysler will or will not do? Because the "aftermarket" will likely give us more options than we could possibly dream of.........

How long until Hot Rod TV drops a Viper V-10 into a new Challenger? Personally, its hard to believe but Chrysler did something right!

The fenders on these cars do not weigh that much. They are very light. All the weight is in the structure behind them.

Exactly. Going to fiberglass or any other composite material fenders all the way around and deck lid would only save you 5-10lbs at most. They are made from really light weight sheet metal, so there is not much gain in those areas. The hood on my charger, and Im assuming dodge will do the same on the chally, is made from a composite. Its really light weight, you could lift it easily with one hand. So again not really any losses their to achieve. Now if they can come up with some kind of way to make the doors lighter, then you could cut quite a bit of weight. but other than that its all in the rims and frame. The back seat on my charger prob weighs 10-15lbs. I pulled it out once, no big difference on the scales.

Re: 4100lbs !!!!??? Why is this thing so damn heavy??

All and all I can live with it..
Maybe they can get creative and do a light weight version with old school acid dipped body panels like they did in the old days but as you stated you may only shag off only 20 lbs your right the doors are a big factor.

I think sooner more than later Ill follow some of the wise advise here on a few mods like what some are doing to the charger srt's.

Re: 4100lbs !!!!??? Why is this thing so damn heavy??

The issue is the new safety standards. The only way they would be able to really lighten it up is to get rid of structure elements. They have a lightweight version, but it's for off road use only.

If you want it lighter you'll have to do it yourself.

I would say that there's enough potential there it's easier just to add horsepower to offset the weight.

Re: 4100lbs !!!!??? Why is this thing so damn heavy??

I agree, I would rather add HP than to weaken the structure of the car. I mean if I were just using it for drag racing thats one thing. But daily driving? I think not.
