Alas, Z/28, we hardly knew ye
The all-new Camaro we've been waiting on for two years is just a few days from showing its production face, and we've already got some bad news. The General has dumped plans for the Z28. The highly anticipated Camaro variant was rumored to feature the same supercharged 6.2L engine that powers the brawny Cadillac CTS-V with well over 500 ponies. Without the Z28 in the picture, the still powerful SS edition will be the range-topper for now, and we're expecting power to be just under that of the base Corvette's 436 hp.
While this is certainly bad news for Camaro enthusiasts, it does make sense in the face of $4.25 per gallon gas to cancel a supercharged monster that's likely to be eligible for a hefty gas guzzler tax. What doesn't make sense is canceling the Z28 moniker when it means much more to Camaro fans than SS ever will. There goes the aftermarket for louvers and mullet wigs. Thanks for the tip, Doug! Alas, Z/28, we hardly knew ye - Autoblog Say good bye to the 6.4, I will be surprised if Dodge doesn't follow... Wil |

The Feds don't mind neither since they're getting paid off Oh, y-ahh , Chrysler does not "follow, they Lead ' ! !!Last edited by Ragamuffin : 07-14-2008 at 03:55 PM. Reason: spell check/info added |

Re: Alas, Z/28, we hardly knew ye
I'll also be very surprised if the 6.4 ever sees the light of day - perhaps for VERY limited "competition" or "track" use only, but I really can't see it becoming a regular option. Don't get me wrong, I hope it does... but realistically speaking I don't see it happening.
As far as the Z28 name not being used, I think Chevy is really missing the boat on this one. The Z28 was distinctly Camaro, whereas the SS moniker has been used on just about every Chevy model ever made (even the Cobalt... woo-hoo). Keep the Z28 and dump the SS. |

I thought/think the 426/7.0L Hemi may also come back for limited action in a few years. be nice if these could somehow be tech-tweaked to get - say 65 -85MPGs !!!
