Mine is actually an AWD system. It is drag rated not trail rated. Our family has had a $hit ton of jeeps(see location) and have had really good luck as far as down time in the shop. One thing I can tell you is that all jeeps and I do mean all jeeps develop more creaks and rattles than any vehicles I have ever seen. Most can be fixed and most eminate from the cargo area. I still love them though. There is a reason that jeeps workhorse wins top awards year after year. All the new models worry me that there lack of trailability will sully jeeps name. The srt is not trail capable but it makes up for it in so many ways. I do hope that these models help broaden their base and keeps the money coming in so they can keep making and improving the great vehicles they make.

Re: Anyone else pondering an awd challenger?

I'm down for AWD with a 450 pound drop in weight, let me know when someone figures that out.

Re: Anyone else pondering an awd challenger?

I was just thinking if the awd system from a charger/300/magnum could be fitted to our cars, not that i am going to do it, just curious if it could be done by someone in the know. Jerry (hemi orange 27F)

Re: Anyone else pondering an awd challenger?

When I picture an AWD Challenger, I also envision all 4 wheels being lit up, like the Hurst/Hair Olds 442 of the late 60's/early 70's. Any of you older fartz like myself will remember that one.

Re: Anyone else pondering an awd challenger?

AWD is fine on the family car. Not on our Challengers!

I think i have one of those new Jeeps of which you speak (Patriot FDI 4x4) and let me tell you, even my nontrailrated model has surprised me with it's capabilities. I have had it offroad, to abandoned strip mines, multiple times and it has performed surprisingly well, only had 1 issue and it was because I didn't turn off the stability control (surprisingly the Stability control can be completely disabled on a Patriot, but not an LX car, WTF?). One of the reason i bought it is because my parents have a perfectly running 96 Cherokee with nearly 200k on the clock and it's runs excellent with minimal trouble (only non mainenence related issues were that one of the fans quit working and the replacement fan cut a damned hose because it wasn't put back in 100% correctly) and the radiator has to be flushed every so often because it will sludge up occasionally, other than that it runs great, has NEVER actually left them stranded except for that cut hose (mechanis fault). And surprisingly, no squeaks or rattles. I love my little jeep, how many vehicles can you get with 4x4 and some off-road capability and pull a combined 27 MPG drving across mountains and in stop and go.

Anywho, on the AWD Challaenger, neat idea, but I say so. it just would not fit the persona. The look of the Chally just screams RWD, smokey tire burnout fun! I think the Grand Cherokee SRT having it is perfect of course and that is just an amazing package, Porsche Cayenne turbo performance for less than half the price.

I'm sorry. I thought the patriot was trail rated. Maybe it depends on the t-case and tires though. We were going to buy a patriot but went and got the srt cherokee. I still like them and actually plan on buying one later. I was more thinking of the compass and future plans. Even on some of the bigger models they have been putting these creampuff t-cases in them. Jeep pisses me off in that respect. Like I said we have been buying jeeps for years and they are always trying to reinvent the wheel with constant big changes and names of their 4x4 systems. I still have a special place in my heart for them. How do you like your patriot for room? I am 6'4". Think I would fit ok?

No problemo. they do offer 3 versions, 2wd, 4x4 FD1 and 4x4 FDII (this one is trailrated, 1 inch extra clearance, low range via the CVT transmission, hill decent control, skid plates, etc). The room these things have is amazing for the size, I am extremely comfortable at 6 ft tall as is my friend who has driven it at 6ft 2, tons of head and leg room and the backseat is also surprisingly roomy (better than my dad's Buick Regal) I goit the FDI for a few reasons, first is the fuel mileage is better, you cannot get the 5 speed with the FD II (I don't like the CVT they have). I like it a lot, fun to drive, and really does well for the limited off-roading I do (taking the beagles to the abandoned stripmines to run rabbits. I'd suggest looking at the 09s, while I don't like the design of the new interior, it is MUCH higher quality than my 07s and the 09s actually have soft am rests and available options like mygig, though this has caused the price to jump about a grand for 09. They are also supposed to have retuned suspensions for better on road manners (mine does like to wander in the lane every now and then, and also retune exhaust systems to cut down the drone from the 4 banger. I really like my Jeep and it is a keeper, but once it's paid off I plan on getting a Challenger (probably a few years at least). Now, if they ever offer the 2.0 VW turbodiesel they offer in Europe, yeah, i'd trade my gasser in for a diesel Patriot (after I get a nice Chally of course).

Picture of my Patriot and my parents Cherokee.
