AutoStick "learning"

I picked this up from a Charger review. I suspect this will carry over to the Challenger. Have never heard this topic discussed before and may be a good question for the next SRT chat session. (although I usually not around to actively participate) Anyone know the internals of how the auto "learns"? I want to "school" mine right from the get go!

"The AutoStick transmission was less than ideal at times. First, since it’s an adaptive automatic, it took a while to get used to our driving, so for a few days the transmission seemed reluctant to move up to the appropriate gear, hurting gas mileage and the feel of the Charger; this problem slowly disappeared over the course of a few days as the transmission computer figured out how we drive."

Re: AutoStick "learning"

At the last June 11, 2008 SRT Chat Session, I asked the engineers that same question. Here was their response:

Question: Is it true that the computer learns your driving habits and the engine will not “come alive” if you drive too conservatively?

Answer: The trans controller and the engine controller both adapt to the car more than your driving habits. It compensates for build and system variables of the components to torque and time events.

Maybe at the next session, we should ask them to clarify/elaborate?

You can reset the TCM adaptives with a Predator or a fuse pull. I have only done it with the Predator. It is true. The old saying "drive it like you stole it" really applies.

Re: AutoStick "learning"

Quite frankly, I think this system sucks. I don't know about you guys but I cruise to church, glide down the autoroute ( at 130 kph), and am generally well mannered about my town( don't sh*t on the doorstep) but when I transform to Mr. Hyde and tramp it at a stoplight it takes it's sweet time to 2/3 shift. I am so looking forward to the 6 speed manuel. I even may cut the 300c and drop a tremtec in it. That'll fix it good!

I chose the auto for commuting as it will become my daily driver at some point.
But I do often choose to take it easy mostly on the commutes but there is usually sometime when you want to "awake the beast".

If it is not 100% ready (IE still groggy) I will be disappointed as well. Hell my 10+ year old Grand Prix has a transmission sport mode that I keep it in all the time. That is all I need. It would be nice for an option to program it to stay in sport mode.

Re: AutoStick "learning"

My 01 Ram had this "adaptive system." Three times within 100k miles I had to take it in and have them reprog the trans controller because it would get stupid and shift up and back during the 1-2 shift. The last time I took it in personnel had changed so I had to beg them to reprog it, they thought I was crazy, reprogramming fixed it again.

Thank the big guy upstairs for the 6 speed manual! It will be a long time before I buy an "auto" car again.

Does anyone remember how durable the 3 speed 727 trans was?

Is that the one which you can keep the wheels spinning all the way into third gear?

Re: AutoStick "learning"

its not really that bad. the adaptive TCM, that is. but if you are really concerned about it. just get a predator. and reset the adaptives once a week.
