Beautiful. Now I'm wondering if they are going to offer it with a 6 speed.

According to all rumors, the 2008 version of the Hemi Challenger will only come with the Viper 6-speed. That's good news to some, bad news for others who wanted the Autostick found in the SRT Chargers.

Is there a mechanic in the house[ 'cause I'm ] ?? I'm wondering why the emphasis is on having a 6 speed[ vs. a 5 speed[ or even a 3 speed oh stop LOL'in at me ! !!] } ??? Ok, now I'm thinking ,' is it mainly for better MPGs ? I know my '70 Challenger had the Slap-stik auto 3 speed [ aka 727 torque-flite trans ], which I liked to use partly as a manual ..whheeeeee !! Recently, I believe I've heard Lexus is/has come out with an 8 speed !! !!!!!

Six-speed manual transmissions have become common due to the fact that modern engines run on a very low and narrow power band due to pollution controls. If you remember, the first real transmissions only had two speeds, Lo and High, and were considered quite remarkable. Two gears were all that was needed since early engines were designed for a low and broad RPM range. It did take a while to get up to speed but top speed was the main goal.

Today's drivers not only want top speed, but they want to get to accelerate as quickly as possible. A stir was created when the close ratio Muncie Rock Crusher' transmissions came out in the 70s. These gears made a huge difference on performance! That increase was mainly because the engine was kept in its optimum performance range throughout the gear changes.

With the advent of pollution controls, automobile manufacturers realized that the longer they could keep an engine in its optimum RPM range, the better they could manage the pollutants created by their engines. The end effect is that most factory designed engines today operate in a low and narrow RPM range. To get the performance needed out of the narrow RPM range, they added additional gears. This has been the practice on race cars for many years, the main difference being that race car engines operate in a much higher RPM range.

Re: Black Challenger pics

On second thought, I think they should have used the matte black on the hood and accents and the gloss black on the rest of the car. Maybe they did it the way they did because it was a stocker and not a street car. Oh well.
Here's a link to more pictures.
